Job Description Summary
As Chief Financial Officer for E&S Specialty and Commercial Lines, you’ll serve as a trusted business advisor to the leaders of Commercial Lines (CL), Excess Surplus & Specialty (ES/S), Small and Middle Markets, and Nationwide Agribusiness. You’ll partner and consult with business and matrix leadership on the development and execution of strategies that effectively position the businesses in extremely competitive industries. We’ll count on you to support product and pricing strategies focused on growth, profitability, and risk management.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
Serves as a key influence and participant in the development and execution of strategies that are designed to balance long-term growth, profitability, competitiveness, and risk management in support of the Commercial Lines business. Develops analytics, recommendations, and portfolio solutions in support of product management, operational capabilities, and risk/return constraints.
Leads the businesses planning processes. Provides thought leadership, financial forecasting support, and key initiative reporting for the strategic plan. Develops the annual operating plan and supporting budgets (departmental, non-departmental, corporate allocation projections); and drives prioritization and funding of strategic and tactical initiatives based on the alignment with business plans and strategies.
Provides oversight and leadership to financial analytics and insights including financial modeling & analysis, acquisition/adoption analysis, product profitability, regulatory compliance and Board reporting, case retention and other ad-hoc requests, to ensure appropriate support of the management decision process.
Assesses and quantifies business risks and develops and implements risk management strategies in support of business tactics and goals. Monitors financial business performance against forecasts and assumptions; develops and assesses business opportunities to support business decisions for resource allocation and prioritization around product development and innovation efforts; Analyzes distribution channel and firm profitability.
Actively participates in and influences the product development processes and supports operational teams in the business decision process. Develops and validates all assumptions including expenses and customer behavior.
Develops and maintains strong relationships with key Finance and business leaders to effectively communicate financial performance.
Develops and cultivates an engaging environment for associates that supports both personal and professional development and growth. Works across the organization on training, talent acquisition and development.
May perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to SVP, Chief Financial Officer – Property & Casualty. Leads a team of 5 finance professionals.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate studies in actuarial science, advance analytics, business, finance, mathematics, economics, or related field with strong quantitative orientation. MBA preferred.
License/Certification/Designation:FCAS, ACAS, CPA or similar certifications preferred. Progress toward or completion of CPCU, CLU, or similar designations a plus.
Experience: Typically, ten years or more of related experience in pricing, actuarial, product, advanced analytics. Prior management experience preferred.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proven extensive knowledge of property and casualty business operations, financial systems, insurance accounting, and financial reporting (GAAP and Statutory). Demonstrated strong financial and technical insurance skills, excellent communication abilities, and demonstrated critical and creative thinking. Proven leadership, including the ability to lead with courage and emotional intelligence, is essential. Must be adept at talent development, building business cases, and providing executive-level recommendations.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
