We are looking for Artificial Intelligence interns to work on our massive semi-structured text, graph and user activity data sets. Join LinkedIn’s AI/ML team as a PhD intern focused on Responsible AI and Trust Engineering. In this role, you will help shape the future of AI by ensuring that LinkedIn’s AI systems are designed and deployed ethically, transparently, and fairly. You will work on cutting-edge AI models and tools that enhance trust and accountability, addressing critical challenges such as bias mitigation, fairness, privacy, and explainability. This internship offers a unique opportunity to conduct impactful research and develop responsible AI solutions that affect millions of LinkedIn users.
Candidates must be currently enrolled in a PhD program, with an expected graduation date of December 2025 or later.

Our internships are 12 weeks in length and will have the option of two intern sessions:
• May 27th, 2025 - August 15th, 2025
• June 16th, 2025 - September 5th, 2025
Responsibilities:
•Conduct research on ethical AI, including fairness, transparency, bias detection, and mitigation
techniques in machine learning models.
•Design and implement scalable algorithms to enhance trust in LinkedIn’s AI systems, focusing
on fairness, explainability, and accountability.
•Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate responsible AI principles into LinkedIn’s
AI-driven products and services.
•Develop frameworks and tools for detecting, mitigating, and monitoring bias in machine
learning models, ensuring that LinkedIn’s recommendations and systems serve diverse and
global user bases fairly.
•Stay current with the latest research and best practices in responsible AI, contributing to
publications in top-tier AI ethics and ML conferences.
•Work in a highly collaborative environment with mentors, business experts and technologists
to conduct independent research and help deliver intuitive solutions to our products and
services
Basic Qualifications:
•Currently pursuing a PhD in computer science, statistics, mathematics, electrical engineering,
machine learning, or related technical field and returning to the program after the completion
of the internship
•Research experience in responsible AI, trust engineering, or fairness in machine learning.
•Experience in Python and experience with ML frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, TensorFlow) and
libraries for fairness (e.g., AI Fairness 360, FairLearn).
•Understanding of AI ethics, bias in machine learning, explainable AI, and privacy-preserving
techniques.
•Experience with regulatory standards and ethical guidelines for AI (e.g., GDPR, fairness
audits).
Preferred Qualifications:
•Solid understanding of common programming languages used in AI, such as Python, Java,
C++, and R
•Experience or desire to learn Hadoop, Pig, or other MapReduce paradigms
•Experience with real-world applications of ethical AI and deploying models that address
fairness, bias, or trustworthiness.
•Hands-on experience building explainable AI models or interpretable ML systems.
•Knowledge of adversarial machine learning and privacy-preserving techniques (e.g., differential
privacy, federated learning).
•Strong publication record in AI ethics, fairness, or trustworthy AI conferences (e.g., FAT*,
AIES, NeurIPS, ICML).
•Excellent problem-solving skills and a passion for advancing responsible AI in a fast-paced,
collaborative environment
•Excellent communication skills

The pay range for this role is $57 - $70 per hour. Actual compensation packages are based on several factors that are unique to each candidate, including but not limited to skill set, depth of experience, certifications, and specific work location. This may be different in other locations due to differences in the cost of labor.
