Role Definition
Caterpillar Large Power System Division is looking for a Design Engineer to accelerate the development and application implementation of thermal management solutions. In this role, you will successfully develop cooling systems and components to meet the thermal management requirements for machine and electrification projects including battery or fuel cell powered systems in Electric Power, Oil & Gas, Resource Industry, and Construction Industry markets. Candidates will have to work closely with application engineers, cooling technical leads, and product groups to understand application requirements to develop the technical specifications to support the component selection process.
Engineers must manage their own development, continuously learning through experience and staying abreast of technology changes. Learning will focus on methods, processes and systems applied to engineering functions, key engineering skills, practical application of theory, communications and building a knowledge of Caterpillar’s products, suppliers, and customers.
This individual must have good communication skills to effectively collaborate with various product development teams to deliver validated design solutions to our challenging electrification program deliverables and timelines simultaneously.
Responsibilities

Assist in gathering application specific requirements and develop preliminary concepts
-
Perform component engineering activity to meet product engineering targets & customer requirements
-
Conduct DFMEA, DVP & R (design verification plan & report)

Support/Lead design review meetings
-
Support Advanced Product Quality Planning (APQP) process and Concurrent Product and Process Development (CPPD) activity to ensure components are developed to meet time, cost, and quality requirements within budget

Support engineering solutions to fix quality issues for New Product Introduction (NPI) or Continuous Product Improvement (CPI)

Collaborate with other engineering team members, purchasing, suppliers, and Caterpillar product group customers

Conduct supplier collaboration sessions to support supplier selection and development

Some travel (10%) to Caterpillar product group customers, suppliers and Caterpillar manufacturing facilities is required

Degree Requirement
Bachelor’s degree in engineering curriculum required (Mechanical, Agricultural, or Electrical engineering desired).
Skills you must have
Analytical Thinking: Working knowledge of techniques and tools that promote effective analysis; ability to determine the root cause of organizational problems and create alternative solutions that resolve these problems.
Effective Communications: Working understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors.
Engineering - MFG: Working knowledge of processes, techniques and methods of engineering in a manufacturing environment; ability to design and implement materials, structures, machines, devices, systems and processes that safely realize a desired objective or invention.
Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Working knowledge of design for manufacturability guidelines, methodologies, and use cases; ability to use this knowledge to optimize product designs and manufacturing operations.
Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Working knowledge of troubleshooting approaches, tools and techniques; ability to anticipate, detect and resolve technical problems in a manufacturing environment.
Standard Operating Procedures: Working knowledge of established standard operating procedures (SOP); ability to design, implement and evaluate standard operating procedures affecting daily and strategic business operations in order to increase operational efficiency.
