JOB SUMMARY
The Component Engineer II supports the Electrical Engineering (EE) and Value Analysis/Value Engineering (VAVE) teams by managing component engineering tasks and providing hands-on lab support. This role combines technical skills in component selection, BOM (Bill of Materials) management, and sourcing strategies with practical lab activities such as soldering, reworking PCBAs, and conducting electrical tests. Responsibilities include assessing electrical and electro-mechanical components for cost-effectiveness, supply chain viability, and compatibility with design requirements, as well as maintaining lab equipment and environment. This position ensures optimized component use across disciplines, balancing quality, cost, and risk while facilitating smooth lab operations and supporting project development.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
COMPONENT ENGINEERING
- Evaluate, source, and manage electrical and electro-mechanical components based on project requirements.
- Maintain component libraries, BOMs, and documentation to ensure accuracy and adherence to project needs.
- Generate NPRs (New Part Requests) and manage PRs (Purchase Requests) for components and materials.
- Assess component options for risk, cost, and suitability, suggesting alternatives to optimize sourcing and manufacturing processes.
- Stay updated on industry trends and vendor options to ensure optimal component selection.
LAB AND PROTOTYPE SUPPORT
- Conduct soldering, rework, and electrical testing of PCBAs and components following engineering guidelines.
- Maintain and troubleshoot lab equipment, ensuring proper calibration and readiness for testing.
- Manage the lab environment, including safety protocols, organization, and inventory management.
COLLABORATION AND ISSUE RESOLUTION
- Serve as a point of contact for quality and functional issues related to components, supporting engineers during prototype and NPI builds.
- Assist in debugging prototypes, providing insights on component integration and performance.
- Collaborate with internal and customer engineers to address component sourcing and manufacturing concerns.
- Participate in supplier selection processes to ensure a reliable, cost-effective supply base for project designs.
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENTS
- Proficiency in component evaluation, sourcing strategies, and BOM management.
- Skilled in soldering, rework, and basic electrical testing procedures.
- Familiarity with NPR and PR processes and lab management requirements.
- Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to interpret technical requirements and troubleshoot issues.
- Ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical documents, professional journals, and industry regulations.
- Skilled in writing reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
- Able to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, and team members.
- Basic computer skills, including proficiency in Windows OS and Microsoft Office applications.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- 3+ years of experience as an Electronics Component Engineer, or equivalent education and experience.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- This role reports directly to the local Electrical Engineering Manager for lab and prototyping responsibilities.
- Component engineering tasks and assignments are directed by the VAVE Manager (based in the US), who provides project oversight and prioritizes component engineering-related work.
