The internship will be in Silver Spring, MD with a duration of six months. There is a possibility for full-time intern work during the summer and breaks. Once interns have demonstrated the capability for independent work and sufficient familiarity with specific tools and topics, some remote work may be considered.
This role will be fully integrated into the technical side of the team in the role of “Student Mission Application Developers”. The intern will have the opportunity to contribute individually and in small-team contexts. Work will be focused on the development, integration, and deployment of software for processing, distribution, visualization, and monitoring of observations collected from the GOES-R series of geostationary remote sensing satellites (https://www.goes-r.gov), via the National Mesonet Program (https://nationalmesonet.us/), as well as other operational environmental remote sensing platforms.
This internship will be part time up to 20 hours a week for local currently enrolled students. The primary onsite location is the headquarters of the National Weather Service in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The duration of the internship opportunity is six months. There is a possibility for full-time intern work during summer and breaks. Once students have demonstrated the capability for independent work, and sufficient familiarity with specific tools and topics, some remote work may be considered.
While all students are different and unique in their accrual of knowledge and ability, this opportunity will be best filled by rising junior and senior undergraduates with majors in computer science, engineering, meteorology, or the physical sciences.
Required Education & Technical Experience:
- High School Diploma
- Must be currently enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate degree program at an accredited university pursuing an Atmospheric Science, Meteorology, Physical Sciences, Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
- Students should have solid mathematics and geometry skills through basic integral calculus, along with the equivalent of two semesters of college level physics.
- Fluent Python programming skills, including demonstrated ability to write object oriented code, and work with data processing modules such as numpy and scipy.
- Fluent as a developer in the Redhat/Centos Linux OS, including functional knowledge of standard bash command set, and use of the vi editor.
- Working knowledge of software revision control and specific experience with git
Optional Computing and Technology specializations:
As reflected in the background summary, TOWR-S work is multidisciplinary, and there will be opportunity for students' work assignments to have a specialization component based on how their academic focus matches with ongoing developments. Specialization areas of interest include:
- Scientific Visualization using javascript, and packages such as d3.js
- Processing of remote sensing observations for feature extraction and estimation
- Data sciences, including development of usage models and monitoring schemes.

Basic Compensation:
$45,600.00 - $56,900.00
The offered rate will be based on contract affordability and the selected candidate's working location, knowledge, skills, and/or experience and in consideration of internal parity.
Additional Compensation:
KBR may offer bonuses, commissions, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation. Additional compensation may be in the form of sign on bonus, relocation benefits, short term incentives, long term incentives, or discretionary payments for exceptional performance.
