Where You Will Work
Interns are assigned to various locations in Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, and Iowa, supporting our business in a variety of disciplines.
Description
Over the course of our 10-12 week internship experience you will have the opportunity to work directly with a mentor in Health & Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene while finding solutions to real world problems. Interact directly with our company leaders to discuss tactical steps to reduce workplace exposure and help keep our workplace safe and healthy. You will gain the skills and knowledge to become future leaders in the mining industry. Building a lasting professional network through social events and engaging activities.
Health & Safety specialists are critical in the evaluation of health & safety risks, determining how best to mitigate the hazards as well as maintaining regulatory compliance. As part of your internship, you will get hands on experience in:
- Going out into the mine, processing and manufacturing areas to identify health & safety hazards and assist in developing corrective actions plans to eliminate these.
- Conducting fatal risk management assessments and identifying potential hazards in the workplace.
- Attending daily lineout meetings with employees and leaders to cover safety topics.
- Supporting the investigation of incidents to determine root causes and learn how we can prevent reoccurrences.
- Inspecting work areas and facilities to ensure a safe working environment and compliance with regulatory laws.
- Helping onboard contract employees.
- Investigating and , developing emergency response & evacuation plans
- Actively engaging with all levels of our workforce to raise awareness of health & safety policies, coordinate daily safety activities, work alongside in planning jobs to identify and mitigate risks.
- Educating on and identifying both health and safety hazards in the workplace, working side-by-side with employees and leaders to mitigate risks and ensure our workforce goes home safe.
- Maintaining a continual and engaged presence in the field by being a resource to our employees (answering safety questions, engaging in safety tailgate meetings, have meaningful conversations and making safety personal, reminding employees about the controls in place to do the job safely, etc.…)
- Health & Safety interns will have projects related to identifying and mitigating the hazards of a particular job or work environment in order to promote the health and well-being of our employees. Most projects would include understanding fatal risks associated with tasks and new projects and researching different ways to mitigate these.
- Perform other duties as required
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
- Full-time student currently enrolled at an accredited four-year university majoring in an appropriate Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene other closely related field; OR
- Recent college graduate having graduated within 12 months prior to internship start date with a degree in Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene or closely related field
- Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Possesses strong data analysis and problem solving skills
- Highly accurate and detail oriented
- Possesses strong oral and written communication skills
- Demonstrates initiative, organizational skills and ability to work well under pressure
- Demonstrates ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team
Criteria/Conditions:
- Ability to understand and apply verbal and written work and safety-related instructions and procedures given in English
- Ability to communicate in English with respect to job assignments, job procedures, and applicable safety standards
- Must be able to work in a potentially stressful environment
- Work is in an office, mine, or manufacturing plant setting, which may include exposure to extremes in temperature and humidity, moving mechanical parts, risk of electrical shock, toxic chemicals, explosives, fumes or airborne particles
- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear and see
- Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the course of the workday
- Personal protective equipment is required when performing work in a mine, outdoor, manufacturing or plant environment, including hard hat, hearing protection, safety glasses, safety footwear, and as needed, respirator, rubber steel-toe boots, protective clothing, gloves and any other protective equipment as required
- Freeport-McMoRan promotes a drug/ alcohol free work environment through the use of mandatory preemployment drug testing and on-going random drug testing as per applicable state laws
Compensation:
The estimated pay range for this role is currently $22.25 - $28.00/hour. Individual pay rates will be based on level of education and relevant experience.

Freeport-McMoRan has reviewed the jobs at its various office and operating sites and determined that many of these jobs require employees to perform essential job functions that pose a direct threat to the safety or health of the employees performing these tasks or others. - Site-based positions, or positions which require unescorted access to site-based operational areas, which are held by employees who are required to receive MSHA, OSHA, DOT, HAZWOPER and/or Hazard Recognition Training; or
