Overview:
UW Credit Union is hiring a knowledgeable and collaborative System Engineer to join our dynamic Systems Engineering team. This team specializes in the administration, support, installation, and maintenance of Server, Storage, and Backup hardware and software systems.
This position will play a primary role in supporting our banking application at UW Credit Union. As a System Engineer, you will be a subject matter expert and go-to person to lead system infrastructure discussions around design and architecture. Responsibilities:
Monitoring, Support, and Operations - 30%
- Serve as the technical and primary escalation point for Tier 3 support, ensuring swift resolution of complex incidents and requests.
- Take ownership of troubleshooting tasks, including server operating systems, application performance analysis, storage networking, and backup workloads.
- Maintain, configure, and optimize server, storage, and backup infrastructure, adhering to organizational standards and best practices.
- Monitor infrastructure performance against KPIs and SLAs, providing detailed reporting and taking proactive steps to prevent disruptions and maintain service reliability.
- Collaborate with infrastructure staff, IT teams, and cross-departmental stakeholders to ensure seamless operation and high performance of hardware and software systems.
Configuration and Installation - 30%
- Plan and implement server hardware, software, storage networking, and backup systems in alignment with lifecycle planning and evolving business or technology needs.
- Lead and champion the change management process, ensuring all production changes are meticulously planned, communicated, and executed.
- Guarantee the quality of production installations through rigorous testing, and when pre-testing isn't feasible, proactively communicate risks to peers and IT leadership for informed decision-making.
- Develop and maintain clear policies and procedures for secure access and efficient operations within UWCU Data Centers.
Architecture and Design - 25%
- Stay informed on industry trends and emerging technologies for on-premises and cloud-based server and application infrastructure to design architecture that optimally balances cost, risk, and business needs.
- Contribute to the overall architecture of UWCU’s server and application infrastructure, ensuring it aligns with organizational goals and member needs.
- Research and implement best-in-class monitoring and alerting solutions for server and application infrastructure, ensuring tools are up-to-date, meaningful, and minimize false alarms to enable swift, actionable responses.
- Champion industry best practices in product selection, configuration, and usage, ensuring all solutions are secure, comply with IT InfoSec standards, and align with UWCU policies.
Perform Other Duties as Required - 15%
- Collaborate with IT leadership to provide accurate budgeting input, ensuring lifecycle plans and future network growth, speed, and uptime needs are effectively planned.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with vendors and support partners to ensure reliable and efficient service.
- Expand knowledge across various technology platforms to enhance first-call resolution capabilities during on-call rotations.
- Mentor and guide junior team members through technical training and knowledge-sharing sessions to foster growth and development.
- Support the team with additional tasks and initiatives as needed.
Qualifications:
- 5+ years of experience in application support, system engineering, or IT server/storage.
- Proven analytical and problem-solving skills to address complex technical challenges effectively.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to create detailed technical diagrams and articulate deliverables clearly.
- Hands-on experience with the following technologies and tools:
- VMware and AHV
- Windows Server OS and SQL databases
- Linux and Container Platforms
- Microsoft 365 and Azure environments
- Scripting languages for automation and task optimization
- Knowledge of policy and procedure development, as well as standard IT methodologies.
- Exceptional time management and organizational skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and track progress efficiently.
- Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively across teams and stakeholders, ensuring alignment and successful outcomes.
- Ability to be a part of the on-call rotation and travel and work in various field and campus locations throughout the credit union network, as needed.
