Job Summary: The role of the Peer Bridger is to assist individuals with mental illness in transitioning back into their communities, with the ultimate goal of preventing future mental health crises. To achieve this, the Peer Bridger engages with the individual before their release from short-term crisis or inpatient hospitalization. They coordinate activities that help build trust-based relationships, which foster hope for positive change and personal empowerment, critical for maintaining recovery. After release, the Peer Bridger provides ongoing support and connections to community resources, helping the individual return to a healthy and fulfilling life. This position reports to the Coordinator of Adult Services.
Qualifications: High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Must be a current or former consumer; or first degree family member of an individual who has received treatment for and self-identifies as a consumer or former mental health consumer. Must have demonstrated a minimum of six (6) months, preferably twelve (12) months, in self-directed recovery. Mississippi Department of Mental Health Peer Support Specialist Certification is preferred as well as successful completion of the required Peer Bridger Training. Good communication skills are necessary. Must have valid driver’s license in Mississippi and proof of auto insurance. This position has been determined to have an occasional or very low risk of occupational exposure to blood-borne pathogens.
