YOUR ROLE
Operates heavy and tractor-trailer trucks to transport cargo to and from specified destinations over intercity routes, sometimes spanning several states, in a safe and efficient manner following all safety rules and DOT regulations. Operated trucks have a gross vehicle weight (GVW) capacity (combined weight of the vehicle, passengers and cargo) greater than 26,000 pounds and some transport hazardous materials and are required to take special precautions when driving. WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO?
- Operate vehicle to transport materials to and from specified destinations in a safe and efficient manner and in accordance with State and Federal DOT regulations.
- Responsible for the protection of company equipment and freight from damage, theft, tampering or loss.
- Load freight on to truck using a forklift and pallet jack, and utilize load locks, straps, covers, etc. to ensure that freight will be delivered in good condition at final destination.
- Unload freight from truck using proper equipment and securing for transit when necessary. May reload or unload trailer via refinery or storage tank.
- Coordinate pick-up and deliveries for domestic loads.
- Comply with all applicable State, Federal and DOT Regulations and CEVA policies.
- Perform inspection of assigned unit and complete required paperwork, recording defects or problems found.
- Upon arrival, receive dock assignment, complete and sign all appropriate paperwork documenting accurate piece count.
- Verify that all freight corresponds to paperwork.
- Communicate discrepancies or damages to dispatch immediately.
- Maintain radio contact or communication with dispatch office and promptly report all delays due to weather conditions, breakdowns, accidents or any other emergencies.
- Ensure equipment is kept in proper repair and working order.
- Clean and secure unit at end of scheduled shift.
- Complete DOT driver’s log and vehicle inspections on a daily basis.
- Provide quality customer service.
- Communicate “Proof of Delivery” immediately upon delivery.
- Assist in warehouse if driving is not required or between runs.
- Comply with all Transportation Security Administration security requirements.
- Present self in a clean and professional manner at all times.
- Adhere to company policies and procedures related to drivers.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
- Ability to read, comprehend, and complete basic checklists, forms or other related documents.
- Ability to read and understand traffic signals and signs. Ability to read and interpret maps.
- Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide.
- Ability to operate a dolly, forklift, hand truck, lift gate and pallet jack. Ability to read and interpret gauges.
- Ability to understand characteristics and operation of customer’s equipment.
- Ability to understand and apply safety principles and regulations.
- Ability to understand and use the computer systems required for the job (such as scanners, printers, and computers.)
- Ability to communicate with employees and customers at all levels.
- Capable of communicating and interacting effectively with multi-functional and diverse backgrounds and effectively presenting information in one on one or in small group situations.
- Ability to identify and resolve problems in a timely manner.
- Ability to balance team and individual responsibilities.
- Responds promptly and professionally to customer needs.
- Consistently at work and on time. Regular attendance in conforming with set schedule, which may change to reflect the business needs of the industry.
- Must be able to read, write and speak English fluently.
Minimum:
- High School Diploma or GED. Minimum five years industry driving experience may be substituted for a high school diploma or GED.
- Minimum one year verifiable CDL Class A or B driving experience in the industry and in type of vehicle to be driven. Some positions require experience with transporting fuel over the road and fueling locomotives as well as railroad industry experience.
- Must be twenty-one years of age or older.
- Valid state issued Class C Driver's License issued by the driver's home state of residence. Some positions require a Class B license. Must have hazardous materials endorsement.
- Acceptable driving record as defined by DOT regulations, TSA regulations and Company policy. Must meet the physical requirements established by the DOT and have, or be able to provide a current valid medical card.
- Must be able to obtain Transportation Worker Identification Card as needed. E Rail clearance is required for some positions.
- Forklift Driver Certification. DOT Dangerous Goods and Hazardous Materials Certification.
- Must be bondable.
