DESCRIPTION
We are looking for a talented Materials Science Engineering Technical Advisor to join our team specializing in Bearing Technology for Cummins, Inc. in Troy, MI.
In this role, you will make an impact in the following ways:
- Investigate and Resolve Problems : Lead investigations into complex material and processing issues, understand causes, recommend actions, and document results for future learning.
- Develop and Improve Methods : Create, manage, and enhance methods for material validation, quality auditing, design validation, and problem-solving, using various tools and techniques.
- Collaborate and Deliver Solutions : Work with Quality, Supply Chain, and Engineering teams, as well as industry peers, to deliver complex material and processing solutions.
- Make Informed Decisions : Use expertise to make decisions on material selection, innovation, qualification, and inspection that influence product or project direction.
- Ensure Quality and Consistency : Clearly document and implement material capability and quality requirements to maintain consistent product quality.
- Lead Problem Resolution : Provide leadership in resolving complex systems issues with significant ambiguity and global impact.
- Improve Work Processes : Lead the development and enhancement of work processes and systems within a global business unit or corporate area.
- Manage Technical Teams : Coordinate and direct technical project teams, including direct management of small to mid-sized teams.
RESPONSIBILITIES
To be successful in this role you will need the following:
- Applies Principles of Statistical Methods - Your ability to analyze technical data using various statistical methods will be crucial. This includes using descriptive statistics, probability distributions, graphical analysis, and statistical inference. You’ll need to model relationships between variables using techniques like analysis of variance, regression, and design of experiments to make informed, data-driven decisions.
- Component Material and Process Selection - You’ll evaluate component requirements to identify the best materials and processing options. This involves selecting the appropriate manufacturing route and validating your choices through rigorous testing to ensure they meet the necessary requirements.
- Material Characterization - Your role will involve interpreting mechanical, chemical, microstructural, and physical properties using laboratory equipment. You’ll need to confirm compliance with specifications and correlate these properties with field or component test results to ensure robustness. Defining the correct material characterization schedule will be essential to meet all requirements.
- Problem Solving - You’ll use systematic analysis processes and industry-standard methodologies to trace problems, determine their causes, and implement robust, data-based solutions. Mentoring others in problem-solving techniques and ensuring actions are taken to prevent recurrence will also be part of your responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Experience
- College, university, or equivalent Bachelor's degree in Engineering or appropriate STEM field is required.
- Post-graduate (Master's) degree relevant to this discipline area may be required for select roles.
- This position may require licensing for compliance with export controls or sanctions regulations.
- Prior Technical Specialist/Specialist Engineering equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area is required with a demonstrated track record of technical problem solving, quality decision making and providing technical direction and leadership to a project team(s). Knowledge of MS Office tools is preferred.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Role needs to be onsite minimum 2-3 days per week.
- This position is for a bearing subject matter expert.
- Responsible for application and development of various Cummins Drivetrain and Brake System bearings.
- Provide technical expertise to engineering projects, meet project requirements, budget and timeline.
- Provide ongoing consultation, problem resolution, and failure analysis to resolve performance and application issues.
- Support global bearing sourcing activities.
- Keep abreast of bearing technology developments and their relevance to CDBS products.
- Document bearing knowledge, lessons learned and best practices.
- Ten years or relevant experience in bearing technology.
- Thorough knowledge of bearing manufacturing processes and quality requirements.
- Responsible for bearing testing and interpretation of test data.
