Overview
An assistant chief engineer manages the day-to-day operations of an engineering department, and provides technical expertise and support to the chief engineer. Their responsibilities include:
- Managing property operations: Assisting with budget, capital expenditures, and preventative maintenance.
- Maintaining property standards: Inspecting facilities to determine the type of work required, and ensuring the building is safe, secure, and well-maintained.
- Supervising staff: Assigning, tracking, and following up on work, and ensuring employees have the supplies and equipment they need.
- Providing customer service: Training employees in safety procedures and empowering them to provide excellent customer service.
- Recommending services: Recommending or arranging for additional services such as painting, repairs, renovations, and equipment replacement.
- Operating equipment: Operating generators and fire pumps as needed, and repairing equipment as necessary.
- Maintaining records: Maintaining accurate logs and records as required.
Assistant chief engineers may also be responsible for overseeing boilers, boiler rooms, and repairs to plumbing, air conditioning, and other equipment.
The job may involve physical activity such as pushing, pulling, bending, standing, climbing stairs and ladders, and lifting equipment.
