Description: Work from general instructions, operation sheets, standard practices, complicated drawings and specifications and other written or oral instructions to plan, layout, set up and perform straight and multiple step blind hole or through boring, compound angle boring, milling, facing, spot facing tapping, grinding and other standard boring machine operations to very close tolerances and fine finish.
Use and adapt any standard attachment and holding device.
Use standard methods and practices to hold and align work consistent with required squareness, parallelism, angularity and rigidity of work piece involving ordinary use of jacks, step blocks, size blocks, shims, bolts, clamps and similar devices.
Work from established reference lines and points to locate centers and lay out work accurately requiring the use of shop mathematics.
Maintain several closely interrelated dimensions involving occasional difficult internal measuring in confined areas.
Perform precision electro limit or end gage set-ups to locate work piece to tool by accurate table traverse.
Sharpen cutting tools as required.
Select feeds and speeds in accordance with type of material and finish requirements.
Plan methods and sequence of operations to develop programs anticipating foreseeable difficulties in holding, supporting and positioning work, and machining parts to meet quality standards.
Refer unusual conditions to Working Leader or Supervision.
Perform repair and salvage operations and diagnose and remedy machining difficulties.
Check work to assure quality standards are maintained.
Perform other related work of a comparable or lower skill level, including deburring, polishing, and part marking.
Perform operator checklist as required and comply with all EH&S procedures.
As required segregate waste material and follow good housekeeping practices.
Basic Qualifications:
Requires well-rounded knowledge of boring machine operations, tools, ordinary layout practices and cutting qualities of various metals. Work from complicated drawings, sketches or operation sheets. Use shop mathematics and a variety of precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, vernier scales, dial indicator, height gage, calipers, etc. May occasionally require knowledge of advanced shop mathematics.
Equivalent to 2 years high school plus 2 to 3 years trades training.
H.S Diploma or equivalent
Desired Skills:
Requires knowledge of decimals and fractions involving the interpretation of ordinary or less complicated drawings and ability to use micrometers, snap gages, electrical plug gages, comparators, dial bore gages, etc. Also requires some knowledge of grinding methods and procedures, types of grinding wheels and their relationship to types of metals and conditions
