Job Summary and Qualifications
The Manager, AI Platform Engineering leads the development and implementation of the AI Platform, actively contributing to technical development while building and leading a high-performing team of AI Platform Engineers to transform ML delivery, standardization, and adoption across the organization through development and delivery of a high leverage AI Platform. This is a player/coach type of role involving hands on implementing and scaling model CI/CD and Continuous Training pipelines, as well as having an understanding of ML Development Lifecycle management and MLOps best practices particularly as it relates delivery of an AI Platform. Experience managing a team of product engineers is also a requirement of this role.
Major Responsibilities:
- Build and lead high-performing team of AI Platform Engineers, including hiring, coaching, and providing career development while fostering a culture of technical excellence and knowledge sharing.
- Actively contribute to AI Platform development through hands-on coding and technical implementation, leading by example through direct contribution to critical platform components and infrastructure when possible while ensuring pod priorities and technical challenges are addressed.
- Collaborate with AI Platform leadership to define technical standards and architectural patterns for AI platform, and engineering best practices.
- Drive platform adoption and engineering best practices and standardization by partnering with tech leads and ML Engineering Leaders.
- Collaborate with other engineering leaders to implement and maintain technical standards while aligning teams around technical decisions.
- Conduct code reviews and participate in technical discussions to maintain high engineering standards and quality of platform usage and MLOps best practices across pods.
- Lead technical discussions and architecture reviews to promote platform aligned solutions
- Define and drive education and sharing sessions with embedded engineers and pod tech leads to drive adoption of platform and engineering standards.
- Guide and contribute to development of foundational ML/AI capabilities including training pipelines, automation, and monitoring systems.
- Champion ML platform capabilities partnering with Product and Tech Leads to identify and address barriers to platform adoption, ensuring consistent implementation of platform patterns.
- Balance hands-on development with technical leadership and team management responsibilities to insure successful and consistent platform usage.
- Collect and synthesize feedback from engineers and pod tech leads to inform platform priorities and roadmap based on pod needs.
- Create opportunities for technical growth and skills development for team members.
- Lead technical discussion and architecture review to promote platform-aligned solutions.
What qualifications you will need:
- Bachelors degree - Required
- Masters degree - Preferred
- 1+ year(s) of experience in a leadership role - Required
- 7+ years of experience in software engineering with a focus on AI Platform Engineering and AI Engineering or platform engineering - Preferred
- Or equivalent combination of education and/or experience
Additional Requirements/Preferences:
- Current hands-on coding abilities with recent experience in ML/AI systems or Platforms - Required
- Strong technical background in Platform Engineering with demonstrated coding expertise - Required
- Deep Python development expertise with a focus on ML systems or Platforms - Required
- Strong understanding of Machine Learning workflows and operational requirements through direct implementation - Required
- Hands on experience implementing and scaling model CI/CD and Continuous Training pipelines - Required
- Hands on experience with major public clouds and delivering solutions leveraging their platforms - Required
- Hands on experience with modern Python development practices including typing, linting, test frameworks, and package management - Required
- Deep understanding of containerization and deployment of ML/AI models and systems - Required
- Hands on experience creating developer tools and SDK and driving adoption by end users - Required
- Strong background agile development within product teams - Required
- Understanding of ML Development Lifecycle management and MLOps best practices particularly as it relates delivery of an AI Platform - Required
- Experience managing team of product engineers - Required
- Understanding of ML Monitoring and observability - Required
- Experience with LLMs and Infrastructure - Preferred
- Experience building and deploying feature stores and feature caches - Preferred
- Deep understanding of ML/AI platform tooling and patterns - Preferred
- Experience with Distributed model training - Preferred
- Hands on experience with Kubeflow, Argo, MLFlow or other ML/AI Training orchestrators - Preferred
- Hands on experience and knowledge of ML/AI metadata tools and model registries - Preferred
- Deep hands-on experience with Terraform or other IaC tools - Preferred
- Hands on experience building ML/AI solutions on GCP and Vertex AI – Preferred
