General Motors has a tax department of more than 150 tax attorneys, accountants and customs professionals around the globe. The Tax Staff is responsible for global tax compliance, tax accounting, business unit tax advice and planning, and global customs.
We are currently seeking a U.S. tax attorney with at least 7 years of law firm experience to join our Tax Counsel team at our global headquarters in Detroit, Michigan. The candidate should be results-oriented, technically proficient and have strong communication and presentation skills. The Tax Counsel team is a group within the General Motors Tax Staff that provides tax advice and support for all tax matters.
The position requires tax counsel expertise, decisiveness and strong initiative.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Support business units by providing tax advice for transactions on a variety of issues, including Subchapter C and K, credits and incentives, financial products, and consolidated returns
- Research and analyze applicable case law to support technical positions and prepare supporting memoranda
- Assist members of the broader General Motors Tax Staff on technical tax issues, including tax accounting and compliance teams
- Assist on tax issues arising on audit, including development of technical positions for presentation to taxing authorities
- Provide advice on transaction structures and negotiate agreements with third parties
- Identify and execute on tax planning initiatives
- Manage external advisors
Qualifications:
- JD required, LL.M. preferred
- 7+ years of law firm experience
- Excellent analytical and technical skills, including Subchapter C and K, consolidated return regulations, international tax
- Experience negotiating third-party agreements
- Motivated, team-oriented, self-starter
- Ability to work effectively and efficiently with a variety of functions (Legal, Controllership, Treasury, Corporate Development) and with all levels of personnel
- Adept at working in a fast-paced environment
- Clear and concise written and oral communication and presentation skills
