Caterpillar’s Building Construction Products division is hiring a Design Engineer in the Global Nonmetallic Engineering Team. In this role, you will be responsible for nonmetallic design and development technical support across machine platform and system engineering teams for New Product Introduction (NPI), Continuous Product Improvement (CPI), and New Source Introduction (NSI) programs. This role will be working closely with internal engineering, global strategic procurement teams, and external suppliers. You will be part of a global team with partners in the US, UK, and India.
What You Will Do:
- Lead nonmetallic design and development across machine platform and system engineering teams.
- Collaboration with global engineering, regional procurement, and external suppliers to ensure seamless machine integration and to manage nonmetallic component development timing, validation, cost, and quality assurance.
- Understand and apply knowledge of nonmetallic manufacturing processes (i.e., injection molding, thermoforming, rotational molding, blow molding, compression molding, additive manufacturing, etc.).
- Actively support a prototype, pilot, and production builds relating to machine platform and system level nonmetallic components.
- Perform failure analysis, identify root causes, generate ideas, and propose solutions to medium/complex non-metallic failures.
- Apply knowledge of GD&T in engineering drawings & manufacturing processes.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement in nonmetallic design and development.
What You Will Have (Basic Qualifications):
- Degree requirement: Bachelor’s degree or above in an accredited Engineering; Mechanical, Materials/Polymer Science Engineering, or a related technical discipline.
- Effective Communications: Understanding of effective communication concepts, tools and techniques; ability to effectively transmit, receive, and accurately interpret ideas, information, and needs through the application of appropriate communication behaviors. Strong written and verbal English communication skills. Strong collaborative and interpersonal skills.
- Managing Multiple Priorities: Knowledge of effective self-management practices; ability to manage multiple concurrent objectives, projects, groups, or activities, making effective judgments as to prioritizing and time allocation.
- Technical Excellence: Knowledge of a given technology and various application methods; ability to develop and provide solutions to significant technical challenges. Nonmetallic product development or excellent analytical experience. Ability to gain a mastery of complex engineering and manufacturability concepts.
- Product Design and Development: Knowledge of product features; ability to design, build, and develop a new product, technology, or service from concept through to production.
- Design for Manufacturability (DFM): Knowledge of design for manufacturability guidelines, methodologies, and use cases; ability to use this knowledge to optimize product designs and manufacturing operations.
- Troubleshooting Technical Problems: Ability to support issue resolution by applying basic engineering knowledge and working with cross-functional teams to identify and address technical challenges.
- Analytical Thinking: Demonstrated ability to approach problems logically, analyze data, and contribute to the development of practical solutions.
Top Candidates Will Have:
- Experience in nonmetallic/plastic design and development.
- Strong knowledge in nonmetallic/plastic materials, processes, and/or applications.
- Proficiency with Creo, surface modeling, and engineering drawings, including experience using Teamcenter Engineering to release product designs.
- Strong track record of effective supplier interaction, CPPD, and project management.
- Proven ability to build effective relationships across a matrix organization.
Additional Info:
- Office Model: This position requires the employee to work a 5-day-a-week schedule in the office.
- Travel: This role involves up to 20% travel, both domestically and internationally. Depending on project requirements, travel to supplier locations, as well as other Caterpillar facilities may be necessary.
- Relocation: Domestic relocation will be available to those who qualify.
