The Role
As a valued Researcher with the Research and Development team here at GM, you will innovate through next-gen ideas, suggest new project areas, and establish technical plans. Conduct research and/or experiments to collect required data and validate research ideas in developing next-gen lightweighting technology. Write timely and high-quality research reports, external publications, and records of invention to detail new insights and research results in your area of research.
What You’ll Do (Responsibilities)

Plan and execute collaborative scientific or engineering research generating new knowledge and innovative technology in polymers and polymer composites for vehicle lightweighting

Drive internal and external collaborations

Maintain awareness of the state-of-the-art in the areas of responsibility

Prepare timely high quality technical reports and make presentations to ensure effective communications

Generate intellectual property to protect new inventions in the area of responsibility

Assist other employees in accomplishing their project goals
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

M.S. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields

Candidates must have either a minimum of three (3) years of relevant industry experience or a Ph.D. degree with demonstrated research experience in a related discipline.

U.S. Citizenship required pursuant to government contract

Understanding of structural simulations using computer programs (NASTRAN/LS-DYNA/ABQUS)

Knowledge in simulation tool development for both performance and manufacturing processes

Familiarity with polymer composite processing concepts

Understanding of composite testing procedures and use of testing equipment, such as mechanical test frames and thermal analysis equipment

Interpersonal skills and communication methods to work effectively with GM internal and external customers
What Will Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)

Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related fields

Experience with advanced numerical methods, and fluency in one of the programming languages such as Fortran, C++, and Python
-
Knowledge in transitioning products from prototype manufacturing to volume production

Knowledge in resin transfer molding, composite compression molding and metal forming
-
Good publication record
