Software Test Engineer
Hybrid: This role is categorized as hybrid. This means the successful candidate is expected to report to the Global Technical Center in Warren (MI) three times per week, at minimum.
The Role
As a Software Test Engineer at General Motors, you'll play a key role in ensuring our vehicles meet critical regulatory standards. You will be responsible for testing systems and software across various vehicle programs, verifying compliance with regulations such as FMVSS 101, 102, 111, 114, 118, 126, 135, 138, 208, and others. Your work will directly impact the safety and reliability of our vehicles, helping to certify them for saleable intent. This role blends elements of software testing, quality engineering, and systems validation - perfect for someone who thrives in a technical, detail-oriented environment.
In this position, you’ll collaborate closely with Regulatory Integration Engineers and compliance summary owners to interpret requirements, develop test cases, and execute test plans. You’ll be hands-on with vehicle electronics, modules, and embedded systems, applying your engineering expertise to ensure everything functions as intended. What You’ll Do

Perform hands-on bench and vehicle-level testing at GM’s Milford and Warren sites

Plan and execute tests based on regulatory requirements to meet vehicle program timelines

Develop innovative test methods and models to validate critical system components

Automate test scripts and utilize HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop) setups for closed-loop testing

Capture, analyze, and interpret data to identify and troubleshoot issues

Use Jira and PRTS to manage work tickets and document issues effectively

Generate, review, and approve comprehensive test evaluation reports

Schedule and manage test properties for various vehicle programs

Analyze and interpret complex regulatory and technical requirements

Flash program vehicle software components to support testing activities

Set up and configure test environments using fixtures and specialized tools

Mentor and support onboarding of new engineers

Travel as needed to support testing and validation efforts
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field

4+ years of testing experience in electrical or infotainment systems

Strong communication skills—both written and verbal

Excellent organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects across programs

Proven ability to work collaboratively and communicate technical results effectively

Experience leading bench/vehicle-level testing for regulatory compliance

Solid understanding of engineering theory and mechanical/electrical systems

Proficiency with CAN-based communication and diagnostic tools

Strong analytical skills for solving complex problems

Ability to author test cases and analyze requirements

Familiarity with software calibration and system design

Scripting and automation experience

Understanding of automotive wiring and architecture documentation

Valid driver’s license

Working knowledge of Python, CAPL, or other scripting languages

Experience mentoring junior engineers or leading small teams
