Job Title: Engine Concept Designer
Salary: £55,516 + per annum Dependent Upon Experience
Location: Peterborough, Cambridgeshire

About IPSD
Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L Cat® and Perkins engines that power over 5000 applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. About the Role
We’re looking for an Engine Concept Designer to join our Engineering Team and help shape the future of internal combustion engines and power systems. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys early-stage design, thrives in collaborative environments, and is passionate about innovation.
You’ll work closely with Engine Architects, Engineers, Product Managers, and component teams to develop concepts that explore new technologies, enhance engine performance, and support our strategic growth.
What You’ll Do
As a senior member of the team, you’ll bring strong design expertise and a deep understanding of combustion engine systems. Your key responsibilities will include:
Creating design concepts that integrate innovative technologies into existing engines, supporting New Technology Introduction (NTI) projects.
Exploring creative solutions to improve engine performance and address current challenges.
Collaborating with internal teams and customers to adapt engine configurations to meet specific needs.
Participating in workshops with Engine Architects, Product Managers, and customers to co-develop viable solutions.
Developing early engine geometries using basic scantlings and product objectives to support project reviews and business case development.
What You Bring
We value diverse experiences and perspectives. You may have gained the following skills through education, work experience, or other paths:
Strong technical background (HNC or degree in mechanical or automotive engineering preferred, but equivalent experience is equally valued).
Extensive design experience with simulation and calculation skills for compression and spark-ignited engines using varied fuel sources.
Ability to balance performance, durability, cost, and manufacturability in design proposals.
Solid understanding of component manufacturing principles and processes.
Self-motivation and the ability to manage tasks and meet commitments independently or as part of a team.
Key Competencies
Deep knowledge of combustion engine and power system technologies.
Proficiency in CAD tools for both conceptual and detailed design.
Strong focus on understanding and meeting customer needs.
Ability to take initiative and collaborate effectively across teams.
Analytical thinking and creative problem-solving.
Good planning and organizational skills.
Desirable Skills
Experience with hybrid and electrified power systems.
Familiarity with engine and component validation and verification processes.
Knowledge of Creo and Teamcenter.
Comfortable using Microsoft 365 tools.
