The Role:
As a Lead Dimensional Engineer at Orion Assembly, you will play a critical role in establishing and driving the dimensional strategy for new vehicle launches. You will be responsible for building the foundation of the Body Shop’s dimensional team and ensuring alignment across Paint and General Assembly (GA) through robust process control and quality integration. While you will not have direct line management responsibility, you will influence and guide a team of engineers and cross-functional partners to deliver high-quality, precision-built vehicles.
Your work will be rooted in the six pillars of quality and Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS), with a strong emphasis on dimensional metrics, CAD interpretation, and executive-level reporting.
What You'll Do:
- Develop and implement dimensional control processes for new vehicle programs, ensuring alignment with Paint and GA operations.
- Lead launch readiness activities by establishing foundational practices for the Body Shop dimensional team.
- Drive the integration of the six pillars of quality into dimensional processes and team operations
- Partner with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and supplier teams to ensure dimensional integrity throughout the vehicle build process.
- Influence team performance and problem-solving efforts across functional boundaries without direct supervisory authority.
- Own and drive the application of A, B, and C metrics, as well as E-31 variation analysis, to ensure dimensional consistency and process control.
- Lead Practical Problem Solving (PPS) efforts to resolve complex dimensional issues and prevent recurrence.
- Interpret CAD data to support root cause analysis, process validation, and dimensional reviews.
- Use dimensional data to inform decision-making and drive continuous improvement.
- Prepare and present high-impact reports and dimensional reviews to plant and corporate leadership.
- Communicate technical findings in a clear, compelling manner to influence strategic decisions.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, manufacturing, or a related field (or equivalent experience).
- 5+ years of experience in automotive manufacturing or dimensional engineering experience
- Deep understanding of GD&T principles, body dimensional data, and vehicle build processes.
- Familiarity with CAD software and ability to interpret complex dimensional data.
- Strong grasp of A, B, C metrics and E-31 variation analysis as foundational tools for process control.
- Ability to create and deliver executive-level reports and dimensional reviews
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience launching new vehicle programs and building dimensional teams from the ground up.
- Strong understanding of how Body Shop dimensional performance influences downstream operations in Paint and GA.
- Demonstrated success in driving cross-functional problem-solving and process control initiatives.
- Comfort navigating CAD systems and presenting complex data in a clear, strategic format.
- Proven ability to lead cross-functional teams and influence outcomes without direct authority.
- Skilled in mentoring engineers and driving performance through collaboration and shared accountability.
- Expertise in Practical Problem Solving (PPS) methodology and root cause analysis.
- Commitment to quality through proactive process control and continuous improvement.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with comfort presenting to both plant and executive leadership.
