Description:We are seeking a highly skilled Pulsed Power Electrical Design Engineer with circuit card, pulsed power, and control system development experience. The role focuses on developing automation solutions, power electronics hardware, and high-performance circuit designs for pulsed power and high-power microwave (HPM) platforms used in defense, aerospace, and high-energy research applications. The successful candidate will work closely with senior engineers, software developers, and test engineers to create reliable, repeatable, and safe automated test and operation environments while leveraging deep power electronics expertise.
Key Responsibilities:
• Automation System Development
o Design and implement automation for pulsed power and HPM experiments.
o Develop control systems (FPGA, DSP, microcontroller, PLC, LabVIEW, Python, C/C++) for precise timing, pulse shaping, and safety interlocks.
o Integrate high-speed data acquisition hardware (PXI, NI FlexRIO, high-bandwidth ADC/DAC) with automated test scripts and monitoring dashboards.
• Power Electronics & Circuit Design
o Design high voltage, high current, and high frequency power electronics modules (pulse forming networks, MOSFET/IGBT/SiC drivers, resonant converters, and bias networks).
o Produce schematics and multi-layer PCB layouts using tools such as Mentor Graphics.
o Perform circuit analyses; generate bills of materials (BOMs) and manufacturing packages.
• Simulation & Modeling
o Run SPICE, ADS, HFSS, COMSOL, or equivalent simulations for circuit performance, electromagnetic fields, and breakdown voltage verification.
o Model pulsed power dynamics, resonant cavities, and microwave feed line interactions.
• Test & Validation
o Develop automated test procedures, verification plans, and repeatable experiment sequences.
o Use automated data logging and post-processing (MATLAB, Python) to evaluate performance against specifications.
o Participate in hardware build, integration, troubleshooting, and final sign-off on design reviews and safety checks.
Basic Qualifications:• Pursuing a master's degree, in Electrical Engineering (focus on power electronics, microwave engineering, control systems, or related).
• Power Electronics Experience – Experience designing high-power, high-frequency power electronics circuits; familiarity with high-voltage safety practices and protection design. Undergraduate/graduate senior design courses or lab experience focusing on power electronics, pulse power circuits, etc.
• Automation & Control Skills – Strong programming ability in LabVIEW, Python, C/C++, and/or VHDL/Verilog; experience with microcontrollers.
• Circuit Design Proficiency – Expertise in schematic capture, multi-layer PCB layout, and generation of manufacturing deliverables (Altium, Cadence, etc.).
• Simulation Tools – Proficiency with SPICE (LTspice, PSpice), ADS, HFSS, COMSOL, or similar for electromagnetic and circuit analysis.
• Testing & Data Acquisition – Hands on experience with high speed digitizers, oscilloscopes, and automated test rigs; ability to script data capture and analysis.
• Ability to obtain a DoD clearance
Desired Skills:• Direct experience with pulsed power and HPM (high-power microwave) system development (e.g., pulse-forming networks, resonant cavities, high rep rate switches, etc.)
• Experience with (MBD) model-based design (MATLAB/Simulink) and automatic code generation for control systems.
