Team Axiom is seeking a Chief Systems Architect responsible for architecting EPIC's technical systems, ensuring robust integration of cloud/on-premises infrastructure, CI/CD workflows, data management, and security protocols. Defines and governs the technical roadmap for containerization, interoperability, and code management, aligning with EPIC's open-source and agile development mandates.
NOAA created the Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC) to improve operational weather and climate forecast systems through scientific and technical innovation via model co-development with the Weather Enterprise - government, industry and academia. EPIC will facilitate improved and reliable forecasts produced by numerical Earth system models that will reduce the devastating impacts of hazardous weather.
The EPIC Program and Contract will deliver world-class numerical weather prediction systems supporting NOAA's mission to save lives, protect property, and enhance the economy. EPIC is a facilitating organization that leverages resources to better coordinate the weather research and modeling community.
EPIC is a combination of (1) roadmap for research and model priorities, (2) development environment, (3) code management, (4) cloud-ready code, (5) observational data and tools, (6) community support, and (7) community engagement
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead system design, integration, and compliance with evolving standards.
- Oversee scalable, secure, and efficient architecture for all platforms and toolchains.
- Collaborate with software engineering, data, and modeling teams to deliver operational quality.
- Continuously reassess and optimize infrastructure based on emerging requirements and stakeholder feedback.
- Provide architectural documentation and decision support for releases and community engagement.
Essential Qualifications:
- Advanced degree in systems, software, or computer engineering; 10+ years system architecture experience.
- Expertise in CI/CD, cloud/HPC environments, containerization, open-source ecosystems.
- Proven record of technical leadership in mission-critical federal or scientific projects.
