Overview
In this role, you will convert P&IDs, design documents, and engineering intent into highly accurate pipe fabrication drawings, assembly sheets, spool drawings, and coordinated bill of materials. This role will primarily focus on wastewater and industrial water process piping, but is intentionally structured to grow into general self-perform trade detailing including mechanical, process, equipment setting, skids, and specialty scopes.
Job Responsibilities:
- Translate P&IDs, process schematics, and design drawings into detailed fabrication-ready pipe models.Produce spool sheets, cut lists, bill of materials, and fabrication isometrics with clear labeling
- Coordinate pipe routing and supports with structural, equipment, and other trades
- Interpret engineering specifications, material standards, valve schedules, and QA/QC requirements
- Review and integrate vendor drawings, equipment submittals, and field markups
- Collaborate with Project Managers, field superintendents, fabrication shops, and the VDC team
- Maintain model accuracy through project lifecycle changes and revisions
- Support the development of internal standards, templates, and best practices for fabrication detailing
- Assist other self-perform detailing scopes as needed (steel embeds, equipment layouts, skids, etc.)
- Support other VDC service offerings as needed:
- Visualization – Renderings, animations, 4D schedule simulations, virtual reality
- 3D Modeling – scan-to-BIM, construction detailing for trades and self-perform
- Coordination – BIM coordination / clash detection between design disciplines, trade subcontractors, consultants, equipment vendors; coordination overlay drawings for overhead coordination, underground utilities, concrete, etc.
- Estimating – model-based quantity takeoff of BIM design & construction models, field progress tracking, Power BI dashboarding, etc.
- Laser Scanning – reality capture (laser scanning) of existing conditions for design and construction teams, including deviation analysis, and 360 photo viewing solutions
- Digital Layout – survey stake-out and as-built reporting to support self-perform, and quality control of subcontractor installations
- Drone – aerial survey / mapping of topography, overlays, and photo/video deliverables, for design team, construction teams, and marketing needs
- SUE – subsurface utility engineering, with GPR & EM locates, combined with hydrovac excavation to identify existing utilities
- Research and implement new innovative solutions to improve efficiencies
Education & Years of Experience:
- Two-year Associate’s Degree Minimum in CAD/BIM-related specialization in Construction Management, Drafting Technology, Architecture, or Mechanical/Civil Engineering discipline
- Recommended Minimum 3+ Years of Relevant experience in AEC industry pipe detailing
To thrive in this role, you will need:
- Strong understanding of project workflows (schematic design, design development, construction documentation phases) and project management.
- Strong understanding of different needs of the delivery team (architects, engineers, estimators, project managers, and field staff).
- Proficiency with BIM (Revit and AutoCAD Plant3D) is required, along with exposure to reality capture, drone, survey and layout applications is preferred.
- Knowledge of piping materials (PVC, HDPE, ductile iron, stainless, carbon steel, grooved, flanged).
- Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, process flow diagrams, civil/site plans, and structural drawings.
- Clear understanding of fabrication sequencing, field installation constraints, and as-built workflows.
- Ability to understand and execute the company vision and values of Team, Excellence, Service and Trust
- Ability to organize and manage complex implementation tasks, establish and meet schedules and maintain focus on goals.
- Experience with wastewater or water treatment process piping
- Experience generating shop drawings for self-perform crews
- Familiarity with Navisworks and clash coordination
- Experience with BIM/VDC workflows, naming standards, and worksharing
- Understanding of pressure classes, valve actuation, pump connections, and equipment tie-ins
- Fabrication shop or field installation experience
