Hybrid: Position does not require an employee to be on-site full-time- but the general expectation is that the employee be on-site an average of three (3) days each week. This position will be based out of the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, MI with consistent travel to various manufacturing sites. Expected travel of up to 50%.
The Role
The Senior Process Controls Engineer plays a pivotal role in launching cutting-edge automation programs. As a recognized technical expert, you’ll work with emerging technologies and collaborate with equipment suppliers, process teams, IT, plant safety, skilled trades, and launch teams to bring innovative solutions to life. From system design and machine runoff to installation, debug, commissioning, and production readiness, you’ll be at the forefront of transforming manufacturing.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)

Lead new program implementation and execution (SOR prep, forecasting, controls design, equipment build/run-off, and buyoff)

Oversee design, construction, integration, plant installation, successful launch, and continuous improvement of manufacturing equipment and tools

Manage project deliverables to meet program timing milestones in coordination with multiple suppliers

Provide technical direction and mentorship to less experienced controls engineers and suppliers

Participate in plant-floor debug after installation and runoff; track and resolve controls-related issues

Adhere to and contribute to the development of standardized processes, technical specifications, and engineering playbooks to ensure consistent and flawless execution of launch programs.

Work with cross-functional teams to understand functional requirements, contribute innovative ideas, develop project plans, and implement solutions

Communicate effectively and work collaboratively with internal customers, plant teams, and suppliers

Provide project report-outs to senior management

Design and troubleshoot electrical control systems

Collaborate with IT teams to validate network configurations and integrate plant floor systems for automation deployment

Actively participate in throughput improvement activities (TIP) to support production ramp-up

Work may involve development, integration, and testing of advanced automation and autonomous material handling technologies

Your Skills and Abilities (Required Qualifications)

Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience
-
5+ years of professional experience in controls engineering, 7+ years preferred
-
Strong technical knowledge of electrical/control systems and their application in manufacturing environments

Basic understanding of mechanical concepts related to machine design and manufacturing processes

Experience with Rockwell Automation or Siemens PLCs and HMIs
-
Knowledge of servo motors, motion control, and drives

Ability to design and troubleshoot electrical control systems

Excellent analytical, communication, and interpersonal skills
-
Proven ability to manage multiple complex projects independently with accountability for results

Strong project management skills

Experience across multiple manufacturing controls assignments with demonstrated success

Proficiency in interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, and using tools such as Studio 5000, TIA Portal, EPLAN, or equivalent
What Will Give You A Competitive Edge (Preferred Qualifications)

GM Global Common Controls Architecture experience (GCCS, GCCH, etc)

Experience with Autonomous Mobile Robots deployment in manufacturing environments, including commissioning, troubleshooting, and interoperability with plant floor systems

Familiarity with communication protocols such as EtherNet/IP, Modbus, OPC UA, and interfaces like REST APIs, WebSockets, and MQTT

Familiarity with GM Plant Floor Systems
