Purpose and Scope:
This position operates a manually controlled gasoline, electric or liquid propane gas powered forklift to transport goods and materials of all kinds. The forklift operator is responsible for preparing and arranging materials and products for distribution and storage. The forklift operator reports to Site Manager or Supply Technician.
Essential Responsibilities:
- Operates forklift capable of lifting 15,000 pounds as high as 168 inches to move, load, unload, transfer, transport, stack or unstack palletized goods, boxes, crates, merchandise, materials and supplies from one location to another.
- Insures proper placement and attachment of weight handling gear, such as cables. ropes and slings to lift cannon tubes, castings and other large and heavy equipment, while loading and unloading vehicles.
- Checks ropes, cables and other equipment for excessive wear or damage and obtains replacements as appropriate.
- Operates electric, diesel, or gasoline powered forklifts capable of lifting 10,000 pounds or more to a height of 212 inches to load, unload, stack, unstack, warehouse, and move shelters, conexes, crates, boxes, packages, pallets and palletized materials or loose items.
- Operates indoors or outdoors in all weather conditions working in outside storage areas and confined shop spaces.
- Moves systems, shelters, system components, and generally oversized materials through narrow aisles.
- Operates warehouse tractors with up to three dollies on a limited basis to move over sized system components, pallets, palletized materials, bar stock, and other materials requiring special handling.
- Works in inside and outside storage areas over rough and sometimes uneven or muddy terrain in all kinds of weather.
- Is exposed to dust and dirt, and the possibility of injury from shifting loads, toppling stacks, and equipment accidents.
- Operates 2,000 to 6,000 pound capacity fork Lifts to load, unload, stack, unstack, re-warehouse, and move boxes, crates, packages, pallets, or Loose items; regulates forks and truck movement, exercising care to avoid overloading or improper stacking or movement of supplies and materials; performs drivers maintenance in accordance with established rules and regulations.
- Operates gasoline, battery, or gas-electric powered 3 or 4 wheeled tractors with up to 4 forward gears, towing loaded or unloaded dump cars, skids, or wheeled trailers.
- Couples and uncouples tractors and trailers automatically or manually under special circumstances.
- Exercises responsibility: for assuring security of Loads, to avoid trailer overloading, and to determine safe material loading.
- Picks up and delivers materials and equipment according to instructions and knowledge of storage and work sites, delivery and pickup points and their Locations.
- Performs drivers’ maintenance, before, during, and after service on both tractors and trailers in accordance with established rules and regulations.
- Fills out daily equipment log.
- Exerts effort required to operate hand and foot controls which start, turn, and stop forklifts and tractors, or which raise, lower, or tilt the load on the forklift.
Perform all other position related duties as assigned or requested.
Minimum Position Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:
- Must be a U.S. citizen or permanent legal resident.
- High school diploma or general education degree (GED) is required or equivalent training or experience
- Six to twelve months job related experience and/or training is required.
- Three (3) years related experience working with U.S. Army combat and tactical equipment preferred. Relevant experience gained in commercial supply position is acceptable.
- Must have a valid driver's license and be able to operate a government general-purpose vehicle.
- Perform driving duties as requested.
- Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance.
Work Environment, Physical Demands, and Mental Demands:
Work is performed in a shop environment that is moderately lighted, heated and ventilated, is exposed to disagreeable fumes and to cuts and bruises from using tools in close placed and hazards of moving vehicles such as forklifts and sweepers in shop area. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk; reach with hands and arms; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. The employee is occasionally required to sit, climb or balance, and taste or smell. Frequently lifts items weighing 15-25 pounds and occasionally in excess of 45 pounds. The employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts, extreme heat, and vibration. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high, precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; outside weather conditions; extreme cold; and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud, or may include unsafe conditions, questioning nonstandard operations or environmental factors that may involve unmitigated hazards, and providing feedback to supervisors and managers on all safety issues. Position may require the ability to pass and maintain a Security Clearance. Position may require travel.

*Employees will earn H&W dollars per eligible hour (including vacation and holiday up to 40 hours/week). H&W monies are used to offset the employer’s cost of benefits the employee elects into and/or utilizes. Any remaining health and welfare monies after all applicable deductions would be deposited to the employee’s 401(k) account on a quarterly basis.
