Job Overview
The Automation Center of Excellence researches and develops advanced autonomous and perception technologies for Komatsu’s mining equipment fleet. The team builds common autonomy capabilities that support multiple machine types including haul trucks, electric rope shovels shovels, wheel loaders, and blasthole drills.
The Automation Engineering Intern will support hands-on design, prototyping, integration, and testing activities that contribute to emerging autonomy features for large scale mining equipment. This role offers practical experience, technical mentorship, and exposure to real world engineering challenges in automation and robotics.
Key Job Responsibilities
- Assist in research, simulation, design, and testing activities for autonomous and perception technologies.
- Support prototype development, simulation work, and validation testing.
- Contribute to software development and system integration tasks under mentorship.
- Document findings, test results, and design updates for engineering reviews.
- Collaborate in cross-functional engineering environment.
- Explore new technologies and apply creative problem solving to engineering challenges.
Qualifications/Requirements
- Coursework or project experience in robotics, sensors, controls, programming, or related areas.
- Foundational coding skills in at least one language such as Python, C, C++, Java, or MATLAB.
- Strong communication skills and willingness to work in a fast learning environment.
- Motivated, curious, and comfortable exploring new technologies.
- Able to travel occasionally up to 10 percent.
Preferred Skills
- Experience with embedded software development, especially C or C++.
- Familiarity with Linux or embedded operating systems.
- Exposure to computer vision tools such as OpenCV or PCL.
- Experience with advanced sensors like LiDAR, RADAR, or industrial cameras.
- Understanding of basic control theory or kinematics.
- Experience from academic labs, senior design teams, FIRST Robotics, or prior internships involving hardware or robotics
