We are seeking a motivated Controls Engineer to support NASA’s Environmental Control and Life Support Systems (ECLSS) for the International Space Station (ISS), commercial space partnerships, and future exploration missions including Artemis and Mars campaigns. This role involves developing and integrating LabVIEW-based control systems, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams, and contributing to innovative solutions for mission-critical hardware and software. The ideal candidate will have strong technical skills, problem-solving ability, and a passion for advancing human spaceflight.
The candidate will provide and perform the following tasks:
- Design, develop, and maintain LabVIEW-based control and data acquisition systems for ECLSS test stands and hardware.
- Integrate software with hardware components including sensors, actuators, and DAQ devices.
- Troubleshoot hardware/software integration issues and provide innovative solutions.
- Document software development processes including architecture, user manuals, and test procedures.
- Collaborate with engineers and scientists to define requirements and improve system functionality.
- Produce documentation and user training materials to assist users in the operation of software.
A bachelor’s degree in Aerospace, Electrical, Mechanical, or Computer Engineering is required. A degree from an ABET-accredited institution is preferred. Typically, educational requirements are the equivalent of a Master’s degree with at least 3 total years of experience including control engineering and LabVIEW development, or a BS with at least 5 years of similar experience.
The candidate is required to have:
- Extensive experience with LabVIEW programming and integration with hardware systems.
- Strong understanding of wiring, electronics, and control systems.
- Technical integration experience working with a variety of engineering disciplines and project/program organizations.
- Outstanding negotiation skills demonstrated through complex technical problem solving and the capability to break down complex problems or issues into manageable pieces to facilitate resolution of technical concerns or issues.
- Excellent oral, written, interpersonal, customer relation skills, and presentation skills.
- Intermediate skills using Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Office, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook).
Desired (presence of one or more of these qualifications will be used as discriminating factors in selecting applicants):
- CLAD, CLD or CLA LabVIEW Certification.
- Familiarity with NPR 7150.2D and NASA software engineering processes.
- Experience with aerospace component testing and test stands.
- Knowledge of thermal/fluid systems and instrumentation.
Essential FunctionsWork Environment: Office environment. Requires ability to provide clear, concise, accurate and timely communication, both verbally and in writing (100%). Requires ability to interact professionally with co-workers, management, and client (100%). Requires travel in the domestic USA (5%). Requires ability to work at a computer for long periods of time (100%).
Physical Requirements:Requires sitting for extended periods of time in meetings with peers, management, and with our client at NASA facilities to discuss technical issues (10%). Also, requires sitting for extended periods of time at a desk to write reports and perform engineering tasks (80%). Requires ability to use stairs or elevators for access between floors and multiple buildings at NASA and our facilities (10%).
Equipment and Machines: Requires ability to operate a personal computer, a telephone, fax machine, copier, calculator, and other general office equipment (100%).
Attendance:Normal workday 7:30-4:30, Monday thru Friday. Minimal overtime may be required (10%) to meet schedule milestones and to support technical demands of the job. Regular attendance is a necessity, and adequate arrangements for delegating duties during absences are required.
Other Essential Functions:The ability to work independently with minimal supervision, and to make rational decisions, and to exercise good judgment is essential (100%). Grooming and dress must be appropriate for the position and must not impose a safety risk/hazard to the employee or others.
