Work Arrangement
This role is categorized as hybrid in Mountain View, California or Austin, Texas. Remote candidates may be considered depending on role requirements. If you live within 50 miles of a GM hub location (Mountain View, Austin, or Warren, MI), you are expected to report to the office three times per week, or other frequency dictated by the business.
The Role
As a Design Manager (Level 8) within GM’s Human Interface Design, Enterprise organization you will guide a team to craft intuitive, human‑centered experiences for web and mobile sites and applications. For context, the Enterprise team leads the design of internal sites and applications for the general population of employees, human resources, motorsports, and the manufacturing space, as well as those that support GM’s commercial customers.
As the lead of the Commercial team, you will solve complex design challenges while collaborating across the Enterprise org. You will oversee the design of B2B applications to support our Fleet customers. Leading a team of 6 designers, you will create new features for commercial customers, but more importantly, establish a vision for what the global GM fleet experience should be. This position is ideal for someone who understands the Automotive space and can envision experiential solutions to make the lives of fleet managers easier and more cost efficient as well as keeping fleet drivers safe and vehicles running optimally.
Your partners and your team will be distributed across the country, with most of the work happening in Pacific Time (PT). Effectively managing across time zones is a must.
What You’ll Do

Manage, mentor, and evolve an existing team of designers

Oversee design initiatives across web and mobile

Champion a design vision to elevate GM’s commercial digital products to industry-leading standards

Lead design reviews focused on solving for jobs to be done with simplicity, clarity and attention to craft

Collaborate with partners in engineering, product management, the business, research and other design teams to shape digital experiences

Own the outcome of high‑fidelity interaction, visual and motion designs that raise the bar for usability and delight

Champion accessibility, inclusivity, and user‑centered design practices

Act as an advocate for design quality in complex, sometimes adversarial conversations where business, speed, or local needs conflict with design integrity
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)

10+ years of experience designing digital interfaces for web or mobile platforms

Formal training or degree in Interface Design, Visual Design, Human‑Computer Interaction, or a related discipline, or equivalent professional experience

Strong portfolio (available online or privately upon request) showcasing excellent design expertise and methodology in your domain

Proven track record of delivering successful digital products that provide meaningful business and user impact

Experience designing for both the big picture and granular detail while executing with a high degree of craft

Ability to exercise restraint and clarity in design, balancing the use of an established design system with innovation and usability

Proficiency in common design tools such as Figma and Adobe Creative Suite

Ability to partner and negotiate with cross‑functional teams to creatively solve for complex use cases

Strong problem‑solving and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities

Exceptional communication and storytelling skills, including experience presenting to senior leaders and navigating contentious discussions

Compensation:

The expected base compensation for this role is: ($172,800-266,100). Actual base compensation within the identified range will vary based on factors relevant to the position.
