Job Description
The NBC News Data Graphics team is looking for a journalist to find and utilize data to find urgent, exclusive and distinct stories that will resonate across platforms.
This journalist will work within the NBC News Digital newsroom to identify data sources that can help the audience understand a wide range of news, from major breaking events of national interest to deep and complex investigations. The person will find new data sources, interview experts, analyze the data and develop ways to tell the story visually.
This journalist should be curious and well versed on the news and have a keen understanding of how to play in the big storylines of the moment. The person should also be highly collaborative, partnering with reporters and editors in the digital newsroom as well as with stakeholders on the NBC News Decision Desk, product and engineering teams, the Art & Photo desk, the network-wide AI team and more.
Previous journalists in this role have created a metric for measuring how hard it is to buy a home, and pushed forward our newsgroup's reporting on AI.

What you’ll do:
- Work with journalists to learn about what projects are in development and finding data to complement and strengthen those projects
- Discover new datasets and reports from government agencies, academics and private organizations to utilize in our storytelling
- Convey complex information using clear and compelling charts, graphics and data visualizations.
- Pitch articles, visualizations and interactives based on data
Qualifications
- At least 1 year in a newsroom environment
- The ability to spot trends in data and the judgment to know why those trends matter to the news
- Strong familiarity with Microsoft Excel and Google Sheets
- Experience analyzing data using Python or R
- Experience scraping, cleaning and processing data – bonus for experience creating data pipelines
- Some experience building front-end web projects using HTML, CSS and Javascript.
- Experience and skill with news writing
- Experience with Git / Github
- Experience filing Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests is a bonus

- Hybrid: This position currently has a hybrid schedule, which requires contributing from the office a minimum of four days per week. The Company reserves the right to change in-office requirements at any time.

Salary range: $93,000- $115,000
