Job Description
The Growth Accelerator team drives Caterpillar’s inorganic and partnership-based growth through a See → Do → Act operating model. The Do role is responsible for rigorously evaluating opportunities surfaced by the See function and determining whether—and how—Caterpillar should pursue them.
This role leads deep-dive assessments of strategic opportunities, working closely with engineers, Business Units, and functional partners to pressure-test strategic fit, technical feasibility, and competitive positioning. The individual will help rationalize whether Caterpillar should build, partner, acquire, or invest, and clearly articulate that recommendation to senior leaders.
This position is ideal for a high-potential strategy professional with strong analytical skills, exceptional storytelling ability, and a track record of producing clear, compelling executive materials.
What You Will Do:
- Lead deep-dive evaluations of opportunities identified through the Growth Accelerator See pipeline.
- Pressure-test opportunities across strategic, technical, commercial, and competitive dimensions.
- Partner with internal engineering teams and Business Units to assess how opportunities align with Caterpillar’s strategic focus areas.
- Analyze the competitive landscape to determine target differentiation, defensibility, and strategic relevance.
- Develop clear recommendations on whether to build, partner, acquire, or invest, supported by data and structured analysis.
- Translate complex analyses into concise, compelling narratives for senior leadership decision-making.
- Build high-quality, executive-ready presentations that clearly frame the opportunity, risks, tradeoffs, and recommended path forward.
- Support handoff to the Act role for execution when opportunities advance
What You Will Have:
- Strategic Analysis: Strong ability to assess opportunities holistically, integrating market, technology, customer, and competitive insights.
- Cross-Functional Collaboration: Experience working effectively with engineers, Business Units, and functional teams to gather inputs and test assumptions.
- Competitive Assessment: Ability to evaluate competitive environments, alternative solutions, and relative positioning.
- Structured Thinking: Comfort breaking ambiguous problems into clear frameworks, hypotheses, and decision points.
- Executive Storytelling: A demonstrated “superpower” in telling a clear, persuasive story—particularly through clean, well-structured presentations.
- Communication: Excellence Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to tailor messages to technical and non-technical audiences.
- Growth Mindset: Intellectual curiosity, coachability, and ambition to grow into a future leadership or manager role.
Consideration for Top Candidates:
- Prior experience in strategy, consulting, corporate development, or technical commercialization
