Job Summary
The Principal Engineer (Engineer 5) is responsible for designing, building, overseeing, and supporting enterprise-scale data, analytics, and AI/ML solutions. This role provides broad technical ownership and oversight, with the depth and versatility to contribute to, support, and guide any team, data asset, or initiative as business needs require.
This position designs and implements technology architecture, solutions, and software to capture, manage, store, and utilize structured and unstructured data from internal and external sources. The Principal Engineer establishes and evolves processes, frameworks, and standards based on business and technical requirements to enable reliable data ingestion, transformation, governance, and consumption across distributed cloud and on prem platforms.
The role applies advanced data engineering, big data, and AI/ML techniques to ensure data quality, integrity, scalability, and security through automated and repeatable approaches. As a senior, stakeholder facing individual contributor, the Principal Engineer works closely with business partners and engineering teams to understand needs, provide technical guidance, propose solution approaches, and oversee execution to ensure solutions are robust, reusable, and aligned with enterprise standards.
This role operates with a high degree of autonomy and independent judgment, has significant influence on technical direction and outcomes, and is expected to provide leadership through expertise rather than people management.
Job Description
Core Responsibilities
- Owns technical outcomes for entire portfolios or major programs, ensuring solutions align with business priorities, enterprise architecture, and long-term modernization goals.
- Acts as a primary technical partner for senior business and technology stakeholders; proactively brings ideas, options, and integration approaches to evolving business needs.
- Leads demand shaping and solution framing by translating business requests into clear problem statements, architectural options, and executable end-to-end delivery plans.
- Drives the future-state roadmap for enterprise data and AI capabilities, ensuring solutions are scalable, reusable, and not confined to a single team or use case.
- Defines and governs enterprise architecture patterns for data ingestion, storage, processing, orchestration, semantic modeling, and consumption.
- Establishes design standards and assurance processes to ensure compatibility, operability, performance, resilience, and cost efficiency across platforms.
- Creates and evolves standard ingestion frameworks for structured and unstructured data, including automated data quality validation, lineage, and observability.
- Ensures enterprise solutions are designed for reuse across corporate domains, reducing duplication and accelerating delivery.
- Oversees development of data pipelines and curated datasets aligned to established standards to organize, collect, standardize, and transform data for analytics and AI/ML use cases.
- Emphasizes data quality at every stage (ingest, processing, load), implementing automated controls, monitoring, and alerting.
- Oversees solution implementation across on‑prem and cloud platforms, including Kubernetes- and warehouse-based ecosystems as well as modern lakehouse architectures.
- Advises on the appropriate data, analytics, AI/ML, and self‑service platforms—both on‑prem and cloud (specifically: Teradata, MinIO, AWS S3, Databricks, Snowflake, Redshift, Looker, and Cube.js)—based on privacy, access, sensitivity, latency, scalability, and cost considerations.
- Defines standard, governed consumption methods for downstream users and applications, including semantic layers, database views, extracts, and APIs.
- Manages the creation and evolution of enterprise information systems (e.g., data warehouses, lakehouses, curated data products), including data access APIs.
- Educates teams on data lineage from source to semantic layer, enabling faster troubleshooting, impact analysis, and safe change management.
- Ensures consistent application of data sensitivity classifications, customer privacy rules, and regulatory requirements throughout the data lifecycle.
- Guides complex data migrations and platform modernization initiatives; identifies risks and leads resolution of critical data processing issues.
- Collaborates with platform, infrastructure, and security partners to optimize sourcing, processing rules, and operational reliability.
- Shares knowledge and insights related to data trends, volumes, quality patterns, and platform usage to inform architectural and investment decisions.
- Leads through technical influence rather than authority, mentoring senior engineers and raising engineering maturity across teams.
- Consistent exercise of independent judgment and discretion in matters of significance.
- Regular, consistent and punctual attendance. Must be able to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) and overtime as necessary.
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
