Boeing Australia is seeking to recruit a Senior Software Engineer – Unreal Engine to be based in a hybrid capacity in Brisbane.
Boeing Global is building next‑generation commercial pilot‑training applications that demand photorealistic graphics, high‑performance simulation, and robust, maintainable code. As a Senior Software Engineer you will design, implement, and optimize core systems in Unreal Engine 5, collaborating with artists, simulation engineers, and product owners to deliver safe, scalable, and immersive training experiences.
Due to the International nature of the role and business as a whole, there may be the requirement to support after hours meetings and calls, however flexibility is encouraged. Some domestic or international travel may be required.
About the Role:
- Core Systems Development – Write clean, high‑performance C++ code for gameplay, physics, AI, and networking subsystems; integrate with existing simulation pipelines and CAD‑derived assets.
- Feature Prototyping & R&D – Rapidly prototype interactive training scenarios (instrument panels, flight‑dynamic models, fluid‑flow effects) using Blueprints and C++; evaluate emerging UE tools and third‑party libraries for aerospace use.
- Tool & Editor Extensions – Build custom Unreal Editor plugins, data‑driven configuration panels, and automated import pipelines that empower designers and subject‑matter experts.
- Performance & Optimization – Profile CPU/GPU workloads, implement LOD/streaming, multithreading, and memory‑management strategies to meet real‑time constraints on desktop, mobile and VR/AR hardware.
- CI/CD & Automation – Define and maintain build pipelines, unit/integration tests, and code‑review processes to ensure reliable delivery of releases.
- Cross‑Discipline Collaboration – Partner with 3D artists, technical artists and simulation engineers to translate aerospace requirements into performant code.
- Quality & Reliability – Establish coding standards, static‑analysis checks, and automated testing.
Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience)
- 5+ years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong focus on C++ and real‑time graphics.
- Proven track record delivering high‑fidelity interactive applications for games, aerospace, defence, or scientific visualization.
- Hands‑on experience with Unreal Engine 5 in production.
- Excellent collaboration and communication skills; comfortable working in Agile squads.
- Unreal Engine mastery – Advanced C++ (UE 5), Blueprints, Gameplay Framework, profiling tools (Stat, Trace, GPU Visualizer).
- Software engineering fundamentals – Design patterns, version control (Git/Perforce), automated testing, CI/CD.
- Scripting/Automation – Strong Python, PowerShell, or Bash skills for pipeline integration and tooling.
- Performance‑centric mindset – Expertise in memory management, multithreading, streaming, and GPU optimization for desktop and VR/AR platforms.
- Collaboration – Excellent written and verbal communication; service‑oriented approach to supporting artists, engineers, and domain experts.
- Strong ability to influence cross-functional teams, drive operational outcomes, and mentor junior engineers.
- Decision-making under pressure and ownership of platform reliability.
- Clear written and verbal communication; ability to create runbooks and technical documentation.
- Business acumen to align operational decisions with product/service objectives.
- Comfortable with Agile development practices.
Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience)
- Direct experience with flight‑simulation or pilot‑training systems (avionics, sensor modelling, physics‑based rendering).
- Familiarity with VR/AR development pipelines and headset performance constraints.
- Background in regulated, safety‑critical environments (aerospace, automotive, medical).
- Hands‑on work with VR/AR hardware and optimization techniques.
- A proven track record of shipping at least one commercial game, demonstrating end‑to‑end development and successful launch.
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, game development, or related field.
