Caterpillar Career Pathways Program – Manufacturing Operations
Program Overview
The 12‑month Caterpillar Career Pathways Program provides high school seniors with an opportunity to build foundational work skills in preparation for a long‑term career in manufacturing operations at Caterpillar.
Selected students participate in a structured, multi‑phase program designed to develop both technical and professional skills required for full‑time employment in a modern manufacturing environment upon high school graduation.
Through a combination of classroom instruction and hands‑on learning, participants gain exposure to real‑world manufacturing operations while earning high school credit and receiving a paid hourly wage from Caterpillar.
Program Structure
The Career Pathways Program consists of three phases:
Phase I: Summer Internship
An immersive introduction to Caterpillar’s manufacturing operations, workplace expectations, and foundational technical skills.
Phase II: Fall Semester Co‑Op (For High School Credit)
Continued on‑the‑job learning with a focus on operational processes, computer‑based tools, and mechanical fundamentals.
Phase III: Spring Semester Co‑Op (For High School Credit)
Advanced skill development, increased responsibility, and preparation for full‑time manufacturing roles following graduation.
Position Summary: Manufacturing Operations
The Manufacturing Operations role supports Caterpillar’s production environment by combining computer‑based analysis, mechanical aptitude, and strong interpersonal skills. Participants will learn how AI and digital twinning is being implemented in the machining process, data, technology, and teamwork come together to drive safe, efficient, and high‑quality manufacturing operations.
Primary Responsibilities
Computer & Digital Skills
- Use computer applications such as Excel and other data tools to track production metrics, quality data, and process performance.
- Assist with basic data analysis to identify trends, inefficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.
- Gain exposure to AI‑enabled tools and digital manufacturing systems used to support decision‑making and operational efficiency.
- Accurately enter, review, and maintain production or operational data.
Mechanical & Technical Skills
- Learn and apply mechanical fundamentals related to manufacturing equipment and production processes.
- Assist with basic equipment setup, adjustments, and inspections under supervision.
- Support troubleshooting activities by observing equipment performance and reporting issues.
- Follow standard work instructions and understand how mechanical systems impact production quality and safety.
- Engaging and supporting safety interactions with mature processes to reduce high energy risks.
Interpersonal & Communication Skills
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and support staff in a manufacturing environment.
- Participate in team meetings, safety talks, and continuous improvement discussions.
- Ask questions, seek feedback, and demonstrate a willingness to learn.
- Practice professional workplace behaviors, including punctuality, teamwork, and accountability.
Safety & Quality
- Follow all safety rules and procedures and use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly.
- Support Caterpillar’s quality standards by following processes and reporting concerns.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area at all times.
