Job Summary
The Tooling Reliability Engineer is responsible for maximizing the reliability, availability, and safe operation of die cast tooling within Production operations. This role owns tooling performance data, leads cross‑functional problem solving, and drives improvements that reduce downtime, extend tooling life, and enhance manufacturing efficiency. The engineer collaborates closely with Tool Room, Production, and Tooling Engineering to deliver sustainable performance and continuous improvement.
Job Description
Tooling Performance & Analytics
- Monitor AB1V status including spares, die condition, engineering changes, and core locations.
- Use detailed tracking systems (e.g., RSC movement vs. APDs) to identify high‑failure or low‑life tooling.
- Reclassify downtime into accurate root‑cause categories and develop prioritized corrective action plans.
Failure Investigation & Corrective Action Leadership
- Lead structured root-cause investigations for repeat, chronic, or high‑impact tooling issues.
- Develop and implement corrective actions with cross-functional teams and ensure effectiveness over time.
Tooling & Asset Lifecycle Management
- Conduct safety buyoffs for new or relocated Tool Room assets.
- Manage the tooling replacement process, including requests, timing, and approvals.
- Procure, document, and stock tooling to maintain proper inventory levels and remove obsolete items.
- Submit and route new chemical approvals through the GM approval process.
SMED & Die Change Optimization
- Act as a subject matter expert for SMED improvements related to die systems.
- Support enhancements to die change preparation, installation, and verification processes.
- Recommend and implement practical solutions to reduce changeover time.
Governance, Compliance & Reporting
- Maintain accurate downtime records and complete environmental requirements for Level 2 BPD reviews.
- Present Tool Room and environmental updates in Level 2 governance meetings.
- Track follow-up actions and ensure timely closure.
Continuous Improvement & Cost Optimization
- Partner with leaders to execute Cost Council initiatives, MTTR reductions, die manual updates, and WPO improvements.
- Identify and champion technology solutions (e.g., RFID for tooling tracking) that enhance reliability and cost performance.
- Deliver measurable improvements in cost, MTTR, tooling life, and SMED performance.
Collaboration & Communication
- Represent the Tool Room in Production Pass On, TIP, SMED, tooling, and departmental meetings.
- Provide real-time technical support to Production and communicate key updates to Tool Room personnel.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Metallurgy, or a related engineering field or 3+ years of experience in metallurgy, metal casting, or die cast tooling engineering.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in die cast tooling design.
