Title:
Electronics and Voice Engineer (low voltage control systems)
Belong. Connect. Grow. with KBR!
Around here, we define the future.
We are a company of innovators, thinkers, creators, explorers, volunteers, and dreamers. But we all share one goal: to improve the world responsibly and safely.
This position is for an early-level engineer. The Mission Systems Operations Contract (MSOC) at the Johnson Space Center is seeking an Electronics and Voice Engineer to design, build, and integrate low voltage control systems, data acquisition solutions, and custom electronic assemblies for operational platforms and test environments.
The role includes PLC programming, single board computer I/O (such as Raspberry Pi), circuit and component design, and full lifecycle fabrication work, including procurement, vendor coordination, and collaboration with Mechanical Engineering and Drafting. Working knowledge of voice communication systems, video processing and distribution, and GPS timing systems is also desirable.
The applicant will support mission, simulation, and testing activities in the Mission Control Center (MCC), the Mission Training Complex (MTC), and the Space Vehicle Mockup Facility (SVMF). Some activities may be mission critical or complex and may require support outside standard hours (M–F, 8–5), including weekends or holidays. Business travel may be required.
The selected applicant will participate in project design working groups, develop inputs for critical design reviews, prepare system engineering materials, and provide project cost estimates for labor and materials. They will also support design presentations to contract management and NASA customers.
The applicant will work in a team environment and must have strong interpersonal and communication skills, both verbal and written. The ideal candidate is self-motivated, eager to expand their skills, team oriented, and able to apply effective problem-solving techniques.
Key Responsibilities
• Implement approved designs, assist in project scheduling
• Provide regular status updates to contract management and project engineering.
• Coordinate implementation activities with integration and maintenance teams and other stakeholders
• Initiate procurement requests for system hardware prior to implementation; track and report material delivery status
• Generate or update configuration management documents including cabinet/console drawings, facility floor plans, cable running lists, cross connect wire lists, Engineering Instructions (EIs), and Subsystem Readiness Tests (SSRTs)
• Controls & Automation
o Architect and implement low-voltage control systems for machinery, fixtures, and test stands
o Program and integrate PLCs including ladder logic, function blocks, and HMI/SCADA interfaces
o Develop control logic for single-board computers handling I/O, GPIO, SPI/I²C/UART, and edge computing tasks
o Interface with sensors/actuators; manage signal conditioning, isolation, and protection
• Data Acquisition (DAQ)
o Design and deploy DAQ systems for analog/digital inputs; select modules (NI/DAQ, Ethernet I/O, modular relays)
o Implement industrial communication protocols (Modbus TCP/RTU, OPC UA, CAN, EtherNet/IP)
• Electronics Design & Fabrication
o Create schematics and PCB layouts
o Perform component selection, derating analyses, and BOM management, direct procurement for parts and fabrication
o Oversee or execute builds: cable harnessing, enclosure wiring, labeling, and bench bring-up
• Work closely with Mechanical Engineering on housings/enclosures, thermal/mechanical constraints, and mounting hardware
• Partner with Drafters for drawings, panel layouts, wiring diagrams, and documentation packages
• Coordinate with fabrication vendors; define specifications, review quotes, track build status, and resolve issues
• Support the design, development, testing, and deployment of Video, Voice, and Timing Systems
Minimum Qualifications
• Experience in PLC programming and HMI/SCADA integration
• Experience with DAQ systems and industrial protocols (Modbus, OPC UA, CAN, EtherNet/IP)
• Experience with circuit design fundamentals: schematics, analog/digital interfaces, signal integrity, and protection
• PCB layout experience and familiarity with EDA tools (Altium, KiCad, or similar)
• Demonstrated ability to manage BOMs, procurement, and vendor fabrication
• Ability to read/create wiring diagrams, perform safe low-voltage wiring, and execute bench testing
• Familiarity with IP-based Voice and Video system architectures
• Excellent documentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
Preferred Qualifications
• Knowledge of Python/C/C++ for SBC/embedded applications; Linux on Raspberry Pi.
• Familiarity with standards: IPC, UL/CE LV, EMC, ESD, IEC 61131-3
• Experience with enclosure design constraints (thermal, ingress, EMI) and DFM for small-batch fabrication
• Familiarity with harness/cable design (specification, crimping, testing)
• Cisco CCNA or CCNP certification is highly desirable
• CTS or CompTIA certification would be beneficial
• Familiarity with Time Division Multiplexed (TDM) voice systems
• Familiarity with audio codecs (G.711, G.729)
• Familiarity with telephony system (Loop/Ground Start, SIP, Asterisk)
• Familiarity with telecommunications carrier interfaces (TDM, IP)
• Familiarity with mission audio recorder systems
• Familiarity with Analog/Digital audio conversion and distribution equipment
• Familiarity with IP video streaming formats and decoding techniques
• Familiarity with video interface types (HDMI, SDSDI, HDSDI) and resolutions (720p, 1080p, 4K/UHD)
