This role is categorized as hybrid, meaning the selected candidate will be expected to work on‑site at the Warren Tech Center at least three days per week (or other frequency determined by their manager).
About the role:
Electrifying the future will include the development of interior lighting systems that personalize, interact with, and excite our customers. In this role, you will balance vehicle and occupant performance requirements while engineering highly styled interior lighting hardware and software. These are major systems that customers see and interact with every time they enter the vehicle.
You will lead the design, development, analysis, implementation, and validation of complex interior lighting subsystems across multiple vehicle programs, working closely with cross-functional partners and suppliers.
Key Responsibilities:
-
Lead design, development, analysis, implementation, and validation of complex interior lighting subsystems .
-
Perform engineering design evaluations and concept development across multiple vehicle programs.
-
Utilize engineering tools (e.g., DFMEA, ICDs, PFMEA) and leverage CAE groups, including Safety Performance, to develop optimal system solutions.
-
Assess design feasibility with respect to manufacturing processes (e.g., injection molding, vibration welding, vacuum forming, foam-in-place, wrapping).
-
Package components, manage CAD development through suppliers or GM designers, and collaborate with other vehicle systems (Thermal, Electrical, Body, Chassis, Restraints, etc.).
-
Ensure best practices are incorporated in CAD; seek support when best practices are not met and schedule/lead peer reviews.
-
Work cross-functionally to:
-
Support initial vehicle configuration.
-
Realize cost optimization.
-
Deliver customer-driven requirements.
-
Implement product and process improvements.
-
Balance business imperatives including cost, mass, complexity, timing, and content.
-
Communicate information to and from internal and external partners (e.g., Creative Design, Purchasing, Manufacturing, Quality, suppliers) and lead the Product Development Team (PDT).
-
Track and resolve open issues with cross-functional support.
-
Review, support, and apply benchmarking to ensure competitive design direction.
-
Support development of Statements of Requirements (SORs) and lead development of Statements of Work (SOWs) .
-
Serve as a key partner for DFMEA/DRBFM/FEA activities.
-
Participate in and support launch activities.
-
Define software requirements for SDV (Software-Defined Vehicle) lighting systems and support calibration activities, using customer loss functions to help define unknown requirements.
-
Troubleshoot and coach Design Release Engineers on electrical/software communication and optical performance issues.
Basic Qualifications:
-
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an accredited university.
-
Comfortable working with multidisciplinary and cross-cultural teams .
-
Demonstrated ability to work effectively in an environment with ambiguity and forward-thinking objectives.
-
Proven capacity to:
-
Contribute to complex projects.
-
Provide accurate time estimates.
-
Allocate resources efficiently.
Certification Expectations (post-hire):
Preferred Qualifications:
-
5+ years prior automotive engineering experience developing and executing technical solutions to support new vehicle programs.
-
5+ years experience with injection molding, PCBA manufacturing, and similar interior component construction processes.
-
5+ years experience applying results of CAE analysis to optimize performance, especially in software-related fields.
-
5+ years experience/knowledge of manufacturing techniques and/or material sciences for interior components.
-
5+ years experience with engineering tools (e.g., GD&T, DFMEA, SOR, Change Orders).
-
Ability to navigate and execute in Math Data Viewing and Analysis and Engineering Change Release environments.
-
Demonstrated ability in packaging components within vehicle systems, making tradeoffs when needed, and negotiating with cross-functional partners and suppliers.
