The Automotive Painter prepares and applies protective and decorative coatings to ground support equipment to ensure durability, corrosion resistance, and compliance with safety and appearance standards. The Automotive Painter roughens aluminum surfaces with acid solution and steel wool to ensure that paint adheres to surface, masks and covers portions of surfaces not to be painted, paints ground support equipment or specified portion of ground support equipment and may paint insignia, letters or numerals on vehicle surface using stencils.
Essential Responsibilities
- Prepares surfaces by cleaning, sanding, grinding, and blasting equipment.
- Removes old paint, rust, grease, and contaminants.
- Mask and tape areas to protect components not being painted.
- Mix and apply primers, paints, and coatings.
- Apply specialty coatings (e.g., anti-corrosion, chemical-resistant, non-slip).
- Ensure proper curing/drying times and environmental conditions.
- Inspect finished work for quality, thickness, and coverage
- Perform touch-ups and rework as needed.
- Maintain paint equipment (spray guns, compressors, booths)
- Follow OSHA safety standards and hazardous material handling procedures
- Keep accurate records of material used and work completed.

Minimum Requirements:
- Knowledge of paint systems, coatings, and surface prep techniques.
- Ability to use spray guns and related painting equipment.
- Understanding safety procedures and PPE (respirators, suits, etc.).
- Ability to read work orders and technical instructions.
- Attention to detail and quality control.
- Physical ability to lift, stand, bend, and work in confined or elevated spaces.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
- Must have a valid driver's license.
- Position requires the ability to pass and maintain a Security/SCI Security Clearance.
- The ability to obtain and maintain a Government Common Access Card (CAC).
- Must be able to meet and maintain all base access security requirements.
- Pre-employment drug screening is required.
- Required to pass a U.S. Government background security check.
- Must be able to speak, read, write, and understand English.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with aviation ground support equipment.
- Familiarity with Mil-spec coatings or aviation standards
- Good verbal communication skills.
- Time management and prioritization skills.
Salary and Other Compensation:
The hourly rate for this position is $28.21 per hour. Plus $8.00 per hour, up to 80 hours per period for Health & Welfare.
