This role is for a strategic and entrepreneurial scientific leader specializing in electrochemistry. The position leads the development of cutting-edge flexible, roll-to-roll (R2R) devices and sensors. Key responsibilities include evaluating new technologies, setting the technical vision, and leading hands-on efforts to bring new electrochemical solutions from the lab to market.
This is a transformational role that requires a leader who can act as a catalyst for innovation, communicate complex topics to executive leadership, and collaborate across teams to solve challenges in new ways.
This role requires a minimum of 3-days per week in our Morris Plains, New Jersey office, 2 days remote (US).
Responsibilities:
- Strategic Technology Assessment: Evaluate emerging electrochemical technologies, material innovations, and manufacturing techniques relevant to flexible electronics, sensors, and printed power sources. Perform in-depth technical and market due diligence to identify disruptive opportunities.
- Innovate & Execute R&D: Drive the design, development, and execution of R&D projects focused on printed batteries, sensors, energy harvesting, and other electrochemical devices using high-speed, roll-to-roll processes.
- Redox Chemistry Expertise: Leverage deep knowledge of redox chemistry to optimize battery performance, improve sensor sensitivity and selectivity, and develop novel electrochemical systems.
- Advanced Prototyping: Oversee hands-on laboratory work, from designing experiments to prototyping devices that can scale for manufacturing.
- Leadership & Mentorship: Provide technical leadership and guidance to junior scientists and cross-functional engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation and scientific excellence.
- Executive Communication: Translate complex scientific findings and technology strategies into clear, compelling presentations for C-suite and executive staff. Act as the primary technical expert in high-stakes strategy sessions.
- Project Management: Manage all aspects of innovation projects, including timelines, budgets, and external collaborations with academic partners or suppliers.
- Intellectual Property: Contribute to and lead the development of intellectual property (IP) through invention disclosures and patent applications.
Qualifications:
Minimum Qualifications
- Advanced degree(s) in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field with a strong focus on electrochemistry required
- Minimum 10+ years' of post-degree experience in an industrial or business-oriented R&D setting required
Peferred Qualifications:
- Deep technical knowledge: Expert-level understanding of electrochemical principles and materials science
- Innovation skills: Creative problem-solver with a passion for exploring and commercializing new technologies
- Communication skills: Exceptional ability to articulate complex technical information in a clear and compelling manner for both technical and executive audiences
- Analytical skills: Proficient in advanced data analysis, statistical methods, and modeling relevant to electrochemistry
- Business acumen: Ability to connect scientific and technical innovation with business strategy and market needs
- Project management: Strong organizational and project management skills to drive complex projects from concept to completion.
- Extensive, hands-on laboratory experience with various electrochemical methods, including cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and galvanostatic cycling.
- A proven track record in developing and commercializing printed or flexible electronic devices, batteries, or sensors.
- Deep expertise in redox chemistry, particularly as it applies to energy storage, chemical sensing, or electrocatalysis.
- Demonstrated experience in a technology evaluation or scouting role, including a solid understanding of patent literature and market analysis.
- Proven ability to present technical findings to nontechnical executive audiences, demonstrating excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Experience in managing R&D projects and leading technical teams is highly desirable.
Key Performance Indicators (KPIs):
- Innovation Velocity: Number of new, high-potential technologies successfully moved from initial evaluation to proof-of-concept each year.
- Commercialization Success: Percentage of new technologies successfully transitioned to the product development pipeline and, ultimately, to commercial production
- Technical Milestones: Achievement of key performance benchmarks for flexible prototypes (e.g., energy density, cycle life, operational stability) on time and within budget.
- IP Generation: Number of high-value patent applications, disclosures, and trade secrets filed related to novel electrochemical materials and R2R processes.
- Executive Impact: Effectiveness of executive-level presentations, measured by feedback from leadership and the successful adoption of proposed strategic initiatives.
- Product Performance Improvement: Demonstrated improvement in product performance metrics (e.g., reduced defect rate, enhanced durability) through the implementation of new R&D findings.
- Knowledge Transfer: Success in training and mentoring team members on new techniques and technologies, indicated by project reports and team member feedback.
