Position Summary
The Facilities Engineering Technician supports the operation, maintenance, and improvement of building systems and infrastructure. This role performs hands-on technical work to ensure facilities, equipment, and utilities operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with applicable codes, standards, and organizational requirements.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform preventive and corrective maintenance on building systems, including:
- HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical systems
- Building automation and monitoring systems
- Life safety systems (fire alarm, fire suppression)
- Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair facility equipment and infrastructure issues.
- Support facility upgrades, renovations, and engineering projects, including installation and testing of new equipment.
- Conduct facility inspections and walkthroughs to identify maintenance needs and safety issues.
- Read and interpret technical drawings, manuals, schematics, and preventive maintenance procedures.
- Document work performed, corrective actions, and equipment status in maintenance tracking systems.
- Coordinate with contractors and vendors for specialized repairs and services.
- Support regulatory compliance and audits by maintaining records and assisting with inspections.
- Follow all safety, environmental, and security procedures.
- Provide after-hours or on-call support as required.
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Associate degree or technical certification in Engineering Technology, Industrial Maintenance, HVAC, Electrical, Mechanical, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 2–5 years of experience in facilities maintenance, engineering support, or similar technical role.
- Working knowledge of building systems (HVAC, electrical, plumbing, and mechanical).
- Ability to troubleshoot equipment and systems using standard diagnostic tools.
- Basic computer skills and experience using maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and perform physical tasks associated with maintenance work.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certifications such as EPA Universal, HVAC, Electrical, or Facilities Maintenance certification.
- Experience in regulated environments (government, laboratory, healthcare, manufacturing).
- Familiarity with building codes, OSHA regulations, and safety standards.
- Experience coordinating work with engineers, inspectors, or external contractors.
Basic Compensation:
- Jobs on this contract range from $35.19/hr - $70.19/hr. Pay range is specific to the Greenbelt, MD area.
- The offered rate will be based on the position, contract affordability, the selected candidate’s working location, knowledge, skills, abilities, experience, and in consideration of internal parity.
