About IPSD
Caterpillar’s Industrial Power Systems Division (IPSD) designs, tests and manufactures 0.5 to 18L engines that not only power Caterpillar machines, but also power over 5000 other applications including Marine, Petroleum, Industrial Applications, Electric Generators, and Locomotives. Job Summary:
The Industrial Power Systems Division has an exciting opportunity for a Diesel Mechanic in Mossville, Illinois. As a diesel mechanic supporting our research and experimental operations, you will continuously improve process efficiency by performing the assembling, fitting, adjusting and/or dismantling required in the construction or disassembly of experimental engines. Individuals will work on experimental, pre-production, post-production and legacy engines that range in size from 0.5 to 18L.
Additional Information:
- $30.67 per hour starting wage
- 2nd Shift: Tuesday – Friday, 12:00PM - 10:00PM
- Shift Premium: $1.00 per hour

What you will do:
- Apply engineering theory and design
- Work from Pro-E models, VisView models, blueprints and verbal instructions
- Assist install builds in various stages on both gaseous fuel and diesel type engines
- Test machines by fitting for cooling, air, hydraulic connections, and wiring harnesses for adaptation
- Install necessary test leads, thermocouples, cylinder pressure pick-up gauges, and instrumented test components
- Perform adjustments on valve train, gear train, fuel system, cooling system, and oil system
- Assemble entire unit of a new design or the buildup of subassemblies
- Aid in the fabrication of intake and exhaust piping, instrumented fuel and cooling lines, and modify wiring harnesses
- Incorporate improvements and developments in present production models
- Evaluate and determine reusability of engine hardware during engine builds
- Uses various precision gauging tools to check accuracy of assembly and fitting operations
- Plan method and sequence of assembly
- Install and remove engines from a testing cell
- Use mechanic's hand tools, portable power tools, power presses, simple machines tools, and powered crane to assemble parts into complete unit, making alterations
- Make suggestions concerning methods of overcoming difficulties encountered in assembly/disassembly and reasons for parts’ failure
- Initiate possible changes in design to correct failure, and use data gained while performing assembly/disassembly or dismantling or construction to produce quality engines
- Other duties as assigned
What you will have:
- 3+ years’ experience in diesel engine service or repair industry or a 2-year technical degree majoring in diesel power technology, industrial/engine power technology or Caterpillar Dealer Service Technology
- Ability to think critically with minimal support or instruction
- Strong adherence to safety regulations and policies
What would make you a top candidate:
- 5+ years’ mechanical experience with diesel engines
- Previous experience in the design and testing of engines
- Robust incident and prevention skills
- Personal integrity and accountability for results
