Area Sales Manager - North
Role Purpose – Area Sales Manager, Clover UK Field Sales
As an Area Sales Manager within the Clover UK Field Sales team, you will lead a high-performing group of Business Consultants focused on driving revenue growth through the acquisition of quality switcher merchants. Your team will operate remotely across defined territories, proactively sourcing new business opportunities through self-generation, Lead Support and leveraging personal networks.
You will be responsible for coaching and motivating your team to consistently deliver against sales and behavioural targets, ensuring they adopt a consultative, value-based approach to selling Clover’s software plans and value-added services. Your leadership will empower consultants to act as trusted advisors—solving for merchant pain points and positioning Clover as a strategic solution for business growth.
In addition to driving new business, you’ll support your team in building long-term merchant relationships, growing portfolios through cross-consulting and retention strategies. You’ll foster a culture of accountability, ethical conduct, and high performance, aligned with Fiserv’s values of integrity, respect, and genuine care.
Success in this role requires a commercially astute, driven leader with a proven track record in card acquiring sales and experience managing field-based teams. You’ll be confident in tackling underperformance, developing talent, and creating a winning environment where your team thrives.
Accountabilities
Customer Contact & Relationship Management
Lead a team of field-based Business Consultants focused on acquiring merchants with annual card turnover between £100k and £5m.
Build and maintain high-level relationships with key stakeholders, senior management, and business owners to support sales efforts and merchant success.
Ensure the team communicates clearly and confidently, presenting Clover’s value proposition in a structured and jargon-free manner.
Support consultants in commercial, operational, and technical discussions with merchants to fully understand and meet their needs.
Oversee the presentation of tailored commercial proposals and solutions, ensuring alignment with merchant pain points and business goals.
Foster strong internal relationships across Fiserv to facilitate smooth merchant onboarding, issue resolution, and cross-functional collaboration.
Act as an escalation point for technical issues, operational challenges, and merchant concerns, ensuring timely and effective resolution.
Champion a customer-first mindset, ensuring consultants deliver a consultative experience that drives long-term merchant satisfaction and retention.
Sales Leadership & Negotiation
Coach and motivate the team to consistently meet and exceed sales targets through proactive lead generation and value-based selling.
Guide consultants in identifying cross-sell opportunities and expanding merchant portfolios through strategic solution selling.
Lead commercial negotiations at senior levels, ensuring mutually beneficial outcomes for Clover and the merchant.
Support internal negotiations with stakeholders to develop bespoke solutions and improve operational processes.
Decision Making & Performance Management
Make sound commercial decisions that drive medium- and long-term revenue growth.
Identify performance trends within the team and take appropriate action to address underperformance or develop high-potential talent.
Collaborate with consultants and merchants to agree on implementation strategies that maximise business impact.
Planning & Operational Excellence
Lead the team in effective time and territory management, including planning field activity and managing pipelines via CRM tools.
Ensure consultants stay informed on client developments, industry trends, and Clover’s evolving product suite.
Oversee merchant onboarding, including paperwork, compliance checks, risk assessments, and due diligence, ensuring a smooth and compliant implementation process.
Monitor and maintain internal compliance standards and ensure merchants adhere to scheme rules and regulations.
Provide feedback to senior leadership on product development needs and market opportunities.
Technology Competence & Reporting
Ensure the team is proficient in using sales tools, CRM systems, and applications such as Excel for reporting and analysis.
Support consultants in navigating technical aspects of Clover’s solutions and troubleshooting merchant issues.
Promote continuous learning and digital fluency to keep pace with evolving technology and product offerings.
