Senior Credit Analyst
Job Summary
The Senior Credit Analyst conducts both simple and complex merchant credit reviews, advanced underwriting assessments, and daily risk tasks while ensuring alignment with established service-level agreements and Credit Policies & Procedures. This includes analyzing commercial and personal credit reports, verifying merchant information through website reviews, online research, bank references, and direct calls to confirm legitimacy and identify fraud risks.
The Senior Credit Analyst reviews financial statements to assess liquidity, profitability, leverage, and overall financial condition, and independently underwrites larger national and enterprise-level merchant applications while approving, declining, or recommending structured terms in line with Credit Policies & Procedures.
Key Responsibilities
Credit Reviews & Underwriting (70%)
- Conduct detailed merchant credit analyses using bureau data, financial statements, industry research, and background verification.
- Independently underwrite larger national and enterprise merchant applications, including evaluation of financial performance, cash flow, leverage, and multi-period trends.
- Validate merchant legitimacy through online research, bank references, fraud detection tools, and direct verification.
- Approve, decline, or recommend structured credit terms for higher-value or higher-risk applications within delegated authority and Credit Policies & Procedures.
- Communicate credit decisions and risk considerations to sales teams, merchants, and business partners, and reassess applications as new information becomes available.
Account Maintenance & Portfolio Support (20%)
- Perform account maintenance and post-underwriting activities, including credit updates, merchant information changes, funding adjustments, and security release requests.
- Assess risk implications related to ownership changes, banking updates, volume shifts, and business model changes.
- Ensure documentation accuracy and compliance with Credit Policies & Procedures while guiding internal teams on requirements.
- Support ongoing merchant monitoring and portfolio risk management.
Reporting & Support Activities (10%)
- Actively contribute to daily, weekly, monthly, and ad-hoc credit and risk reporting, including analysis of trends and key metrics.
- Drive and support process improvement initiatives that enhance efficiency, data quality, and fraud prevention.
- Play a key role in special projects, audits, and additional initiatives, providing analysis and insights as required.
Required Skills & Qualifications
- Strong credit analysis, underwriting, and independent decision-making skills.
- Advanced financial statement analysis experience, including assessment of liquidity, profitability, leverage, key ratios, and year-over-year trends.
- Strong communication, organization, and prioritization skills, with the ability to meet SLAs in a fast-paced environment.
- Proven ability to collaborate effectively with internal and external partners.
- Minimum 3 years of experience in commercial credit underwriting and analysis; proficient in Excel, Word, and research tools, with the ability to learn internal systems quickly.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in risk management or fraud investigation.
- Post-secondary education in business, finance, commerce, or related field.
- Familiarity with Canadian industries and economic environments, along with experience in payment processing or merchant-services operations.
- French language skills (written and spoken).
Salary Range:
$56,000.00-$70,000.00
