Role Overview
CVS Health's Analytics & Behavior Change (A&BC) is an organization working to solve some of the most challenging problems at the intersection of technology and healthcare. Smart Health Journey (SHJ) is a member identification engine to prioritize the right members for clinical outreach. The SHJ Portfolio Lead is responsible for driving the delivery of business outcomes (medical cost savings) through the SHJ Portfolio, serving as the critical bridge between business stakeholders, technical teams, and cross-functional partners. This role owns the "what" and "why" for the Portfolio, defining problems, shaping priorities, and cascading to the four specific squads driving the solution and delivery. This role is the critical bridge between VP+ business stakeholders and the cross-functional technical teams building at the forefront of data science-driven product delivery.
This is a senior individual contributor role that requires leading effectively by influence across a cross-functional team working at the forefront of delivering high-visibility, data science-driven products.
Key Responsibilities
Business & Product Strategy (~40%)
·Define and document business outcomes and requirements in partnership with stakeholders; maintain a portfolio roadmap that balances near-term delivery with longer-term strategic goals
·Translate portfolio-level business goals into prioritized, time-bound squad-level objectives with clear traceability to intended results
·Distill complex AI/ML model outputs and algorithmic insights into user-centric product requirements that business stakeholders understand, trust, and act on
Frame investment implications and strategic trade-offs for senior stakeholders, connecting portfolio direction to broader organizational priorities
Stakeholder & Relationship Management (~30%)
- Serve as the primary point of engagement for VP+ business stakeholders – building trusted relationships, navigating complex stakeholder dynamics, and ensuring sustained alignment on portfolio direction and progress
- Tailor communication approach by audience and goal—whether aligning, deciding, or unblocking – and anticipate misalignment before it surfaces
- Partner with adjacent portfolios and technology teams to coordinate on shared objectives, integration dependencies, and cross-portfolio trade-offs
Delivery Leadership & cross functional collaboration (~30%)
- Lead the end-to-end portfolio lifecycle—from ideation through technical development to full-scale release
- Identify and resolve cross-squad and / or cross-portfolio conflicts, dependencies, and prioritization trade-offs that cannot be managed at the squad level
- Engage credibly in technical discussions, partnering with Portfolio Tech Leaders to ensure feasibility and traceability
- Able to step in to perform hands-on product manager responsibilities when needed — whether to troubleshoot delivery issues, cover gaps, or model best practices in the field
- Model expected squad behaviors and norms; coach squad roles on storytelling, value communication, and delivery excellence to continuously raise the bar across the portfolio
Qualifications
Required Experience
- 10+ years of experience in product management, technical program management, or a related discipline, with demonstrated progression to senior scope
- 5+ years of hands-on software product management experience, with a track record of shipping products through multiple full lifecycle releases — from discovery through launch — in an agile environment
- Proven experience building and leading cross-functional teams (data scientists, engineers, analysts, and/or UX designers) using agile frameworks and tools such as Jira or Confluence
- Demonstrated success delivering products built on algorithms, AI/ML recommendations, or data science outputs, including translating complex analytical insights into user-centric requirements and trusted business decisions
- Proven track record managing VP+ stakeholder relationships in a matrixed environment — driving alignment, building business cases, and managing escalations
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills; executive-ready presence with the ability to translate fluidly between technical and business audiences
Preferred Experience
- Domain expertise relevant to SHJ business objectives (health insurance, care management, health care quality)
- Familiarity with data science and analytic processes such as measurement methodologies, statistical testing, machine learning modeling, or data visualization
- Experience integrating with multiple technology teams and coordinating across squads toward shared business goals
Education
- Bachelor's degree required, preferably in a quantitative, analytical, or technical field (e.g., Data Science, Statistics, Computer Science, Health Informatics, Economics, or related discipline)
- MBA or advanced degree preferred

- Business partners, squad roles, adjacent tech teams, and adjacent portfolios view the Portfolio Lead as a trusted, stabilizing partner

- Decisions are well-documented, tradeoffs are transparent, and stakeholders feel confident in the Portfolios direction
- Users trust and adopt model-driven recommendations, resulting in improved business and customer outcomes
Pay Range
The typical pay range for this role is:
$144,200.00 - $288,400.00
This pay range represents the base hourly rate or base annual full-time salary for all positions in the job grade within which this position falls. The actual base salary offer will depend on a variety of factors including experience, education, geography and other relevant factors. This position is eligible for a CVS Health bonus, commission or short-term incentive program in addition to the base pay range listed above. This position also includes an award target in the company’s equity award program.
