Job Title
Distinguished Principal Engineering Leader
About your role:
As a Distinguished Principal Engineering Leader, you will serve as a top-level technical authority shaping the architecture, engineering standards, product engineering delivery and long-term platform strategy for enterprise-scale payment and financial technology systems. You will work across engineering, product, infrastructure, security, and executive leadership teams to solve complex platform challenges, drive modernization across multiple domains, and accelerate the responsible adoption of AI capabilities across the engineering organization. Your work will enable resilient, high-volume systems and establish reusable patterns that improve scale, reliability, developer productivity, and innovation across the enterprise.
What you'll do:
- Define and drive enterprise-level technical strategy for large-scale distributed platforms that support critical business capabilities and high-volume transaction processing.
- Lead architecture and product engineering delivery for complex, multi-domain platform initiatives, including modernization, decomposition, and cloud-native transformation across legacy and emerging systems.
- Establish, scale and deliver technical standards, reference architectures, and engineering guardrails adopted across multiple teams, platforms, and business areas.
- Solve ambiguous, high-impact architecture challenges involving scale, performance, resiliency, availability, and operability in enterprise production environments.
- Guide the design of event-driven, microservices-based, and multi-region systems that improve fault tolerance, recovery, and long-term platform adaptability.
- Define and promote engineering patterns for the responsible use of AI, including AI-assisted development, intelligent automation, and platform capabilities that improve engineering effectiveness and system operations.
- Partner with engineering and enterprise stakeholders to evaluate, integrate, and scale AI-enabled tools, workflows, or platform services in alignment with security, governance, privacy, and operational requirements.
- Mentor principal engineers and other senior technical leaders by raising engineering quality, design rigor, AI fluency, and technical decision-making standards across the organization.
- Responsibilities listed are not intended to be all-inclusive and may be modified as necessary.
Experience you'll need to have:
- 15+ years of experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems in enterprise or hyperscale technology environments.
- 15+ years of experience leading architecture for modernizing complex platform ecosystems using event-driven architecture, microservices decomposition, distributed data patterns, and service-based integration.
- 12+ years of experience defining technical strategy, technical delivery and architecture standards across multiple teams, products, or enterprise domains.
- 12+ years of experience designing highly available systems for high-volume transaction processing, including multi-region resilience, performance optimization, fault tolerance, and disaster recovery.
- 5+ years of experience evaluating, integrating, or scaling AI or machine learning (ML) capabilities within engineering platforms, software delivery workflows, automation frameworks, or production systems.
- Experience driving cloud-native architecture and modernization using Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, Kubernetes, and related container orchestration or infrastructure platforms.
- Experience establishing measurable engineering practices for AI-assisted development, intelligent automation, or data-driven operational improvement.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in computer science, computer engineering, information systems, or a related field, or equivalent combination of education, related experience and/or military experience.
Experience that would be great to have:
- Experience influencing technical direction at a tier-1 technology company or similarly scaled engineering organization.
- Experience in financial services, payments, or other regulated environments with demanding availability, security, and transaction integrity requirements.
- Experience establishing reusable architecture patterns, platform standards, and modernization frameworks adopted across an enterprise.
- Experience with generative AI, large language model (LLM) enabled engineering tools, or machine learning operations (MLOps) practices in enterprise environments.
How you'll work:
- This role is on-site Monday through Friday. Fiserv considers in-person collaboration to be an essential part of this role as in-person office experiences help you with your overall onboarding experience and leads to stronger productivity.
- This role requires use of a computer and audio equipment.
