Position Summary
The Executive Director, Medical Communications & Digital Excellence is a transformative enterprise leadership role within the Medical Excellence organization at Bristol Myers Squibb. This leader is accountable for one unified, high-performing team formed through the integration of Medical Communications Excellence and Medical Digital Engagement — creating a cohesive, customer-focused capability that elevates BMS's scientific communications across all channels, both traditional and digital.
A critical dimension of this role is serving as the enterprise center of excellence for Medical Communications — elevating the scientific narrative strategies developed within each Therapy Area, ensuring they are translated into compelling, consistent, and measurable communications across channels. This leader partners closely with TA-embedded Medical Communications leads to strengthen scientific storytelling, optimize ways of working, and pull strategy through into integrated digital execution and measurement. By fusing deep scientific expertise with cutting-edge digital strategies, this leader will ensure a consistent, impactful, and compliant OneBMS voice across all medical communication touchpoints — spanning publications, medical education, content development, omni-channel engagement, and social media.
Key Responsibilities
- Reports to the Vice President, Head of Medical Excellence and serves as a member of the Medical Excellence Leadership Team
- Leads the organizational integration of Medical Communications Excellence and Medical Digital Engagement into a single, high-performing team — establishing a unified culture, shared operating model, and clear roles and accountabilities that leverage the full capability of both organizations
- Serves as the enterprise center of excellence and trusted strategic advisor to TA-embedded Medical Communications leads — elevating scientific narrative strategies, strengthening communications standards, and ensuring enterprise-wide consistency in how BMS tells its scientific story across assets and indications
- Establishes enterprise standards, frameworks, and best practices for scientific narrative development — ensuring TA Medical Communications teams have the tools, guidance, and strategic support to develop differentiated, evidence-based narratives that resonate with HCPs, patients, and payers
- Drives the pull-through of TA scientific strategies into integrated digital channel execution — ensuring scientific narratives developed at the asset level are amplified, personalized, and measured across web, social media, digital medical education, and congress digital channels
- Develops and implements a unified strategy for medical communications and digital engagement, integrating content and engagement insights from customers (HCPs, patients, payers) to ensure a data-driven, customer-focused approach to scientific communications and channel strategy
- Develops and implements comprehensive end-to-end strategies for optimizing external medical communications, including publications, medical education, and content development across all TAs and assets, alongside an integrated digital channel strategy and measurement plan
- Leads the development and evolution of digital, AI, and technology strategy to meet business needs through a personalized omni-channel approach — remaining current with the external digital and AI landscape to broaden reach and deepen engagement of BMS's scientific communications
- Drives innovation in medical communications and digital engagement, leveraging AI-enabled tools, digital methodologies, and data analytics to enhance communication effectiveness, efficiency, and impact
- Defines and owns the measurement and impact framework for medical communications and digital engagement — establishing clear metrics, KPIs, and value narratives that demonstrate the contribution of communications activities to Medical Affairs outcomes and patient-facing results
- Optimizes resource allocation and financial expenditures across the function, identifying opportunities for cost savings, efficiency improvements, and investment in future capabilities
- Builds, leads, and develops a high-performing, inclusive team — fostering a culture of innovation, collaboration, scientific rigor, customer focus, personal accountability, and commitment to results
Qualifications & Experience
- Advanced degree (MD, PhD, PharmD, or Masters in life sciences); other advanced degrees in science, business, or healthcare with equivalent experience will be considered
- 10+ years of progressive experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with senior leadership roles including 5+ years in medical communications and digital engagement
- Demonstrated expertise in scientific narrative development and medical storytelling, with a track record of elevating the quality and impact of external scientific communications across multiple TAs and assets
- Extensive knowledge of publications, medical education, content development, and external scientific communications within the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry
- Deep expertise in digital engagement strategies, omni-channel execution, social media, and digital innovation within a medical or commercial pharmaceutical context
- Deep knowledge of content systems, digital engagement and content data and structure, including digital and privacy regulations
- Demonstrated track record of scaling innovation, including AI, digital, and data-driven models within a Medical Affairs or broader enterprise context
- Proven people-leadership experience, including building and developing high-performing teams through periods of organizational change and integration
- Strong ability to influence and lead senior stakeholders without direct authority across a matrixed, multicultural, global organization
- Exceptional strategic thinking and analytical skills, with the ability to translate complex scientific and business concepts into actionable strategies and make sound trade-off decisions
- In-depth knowledge of compliance, external transparency, conflict-of-interest standards, copyright, and other legal and regulatory requirements governing drug marketing and medical information
- Excellent written and oral communication skills, with advanced presentation skills and the ability to communicate complex data and strategic narratives to senior executives with impact
- Proven project management skills; experienced with business/process redesign and change management
- Ability and willingness to travel nationally and internationally (up to 15% domestic and international)

Compensation Overview
$255,480 - $309,587
The starting compensation range(s) for this role are listed above for a full-time employee (FTE) basis. Additional incentive cash and stock opportunities (based on eligibility) may be available. The starting pay rate takes into account characteristics of the job, such as required skills, where the job is performed, the employee’s work schedule, job-related knowledge, and experience. Final, individual compensation will be decided based on demonstrated experience.

Paid Time Off
- US Exempt Employees flexible time off (unlimited, with manager approval, 11 paid national holidays (not applicable to employees in Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico or Rayzebio employees)
- Phoenix, AZ, Puerto Rico and Rayzebio Exempt, Non-Exempt, Hourly Employees 160 hours annual paid vacation for new hires with manager approval, 11 national holidays, and 3 optional holidays
Based on eligibility*, additional time off for employees may include unlimited paid sick time, up to 2 paid volunteer days per year, summer hours flexibility, leaves of absence for medical, personal, parental, caregiver, bereavement, and military needs and an annual Global Shutdown between Christmas and New Years Day.
All global employees full and part-time who are actively employed at and paid directly by BMS at the end of the calendar year are eligible to take advantage of the Global Shutdown.
- Eligibility Disclosure The summer hours program is for United States (U.S.) office-based employees due to the unique nature of their work. Summer hours are generally not available for field sales and manufacturing operations and may also be limited for the capability centers. Employees in remote-by-design or lab-based roles may be eligible for summer hours, depending on the nature of their work, and should discuss eligibility with their manager. Employees covered under a collective bargaining agreement should consult that document to determine if they are eligible. Contractors, leased workers and other service providers are not eligible to participate in the program.

BMS has an occupancy structure that determines where an employee is required to conduct their work. This structure includes site-essential, site-by-design, field-based and remote-by-design jobs. The occupancy type that you are assigned is determined by the nature and responsibilities of your role
Site-essential roles require 100% of shifts onsite at your assigned facility. Site-by-design roles may be eligible for a hybrid work model with at least 50% onsite at your assigned facility.
