Job Summary
Asheville Pulmonary and Critical Care Associates is seeking a skilled and patient-focused full-time Respiratory Therapist to join our outpatient diagnostic team in Asheville, NC. This role is dedicated to conducting specialized diagnostic testing to evaluate patient cardiopulmonary health in accordance with American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society (ATS/ERS) standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Pulmonary Diagnostics: Perform comprehensive outpatient pulmonary function testing, including spirometry, lung volumes via body plethysmography or gas dilution, and DLCO measurements.
- Patient Screening & Coaching: Screen patients for absolute and relative contraindications before testing. Provide clear instruction and real-time coaching to ensure acceptable, repeatable diagnostic maneuvers while keeping patient safety paramount.
- Equipment Care & Calibration: Perform required daily morning volume calibrations, flow sensor checks, and gas analyzer verifications using MGC Diagnostics systems.
- Documentation & System Integrity: Accurately document testing quality, technician attribution, and clinical observations using Breeze Suite software. Objective documentation of limited or suboptimal patient effort is required.
- Infection Control: Maintain surface disinfection protocols, replace filters and mouthpieces between patients, and observe appropriate room turnover and ventilation clearance times.
- Protocol Compliance: Adhere strictly to practice protocols, maintaining proper clinical workflow boundaries for testing completion and bronchodilator administration.
- Maintaining an orderly, efficient and timely flow of patients.
- Assist in the diagnosis, treatment and management of patients.
- Screening patients for appropriate information
- Instructing patients and family regarding medications and treatment instructions.
- Maintaining current knowledge to assure a safe working environment and demonstrating practical application of all policies and procedures relative to safety and infection control.
- Utilizing universal precautions in any potential contact with patient body fluids or used patient supplies that may be contaminated with patient body fluids.
Qualifications & Credentials
Credentials & Licensure:
- North Carolina Respiratory Therapy State Licensure.
- Minimum: Certified Respiratory Therapist (CRT) credential from the NBRC.
- Preferred: Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential.
- Preferred: Certified Pulmonary Function Technologist (CPFT) or Registered Pulmonary Function Technologist (RPFT) credential from the NBRC.
Experience:
- Minimum: 1 year of clinical respiratory care experience.
- Preferred: 2 or more years of dedicated PFT experience, specifically with body plethysmography and DLCO testing.
Work Schedule & Environment
- Shift Structure: Choose between 4 10-hour shifts or 5 8-hour shifts.
- Work-Life Balance: No weekends and no holidays.
- Practice Environment: Outpatient diagnostic setting focusing strictly on standard PFT procedures (high-risk methacholine challenge testing is not performed on-site).
