THE WORK
Lockheed Martin's Overhead Persistent Infrared (OPIR) Infrastructure team is seeking a skilled level 2 Hardware Engineer with an active Secret clearance to work from our Boulder, CO, location.
Join a team where your hardware expertise will keep the sensors that watch the sky running flawlessly, give our warfighters the split‑second advantage they need, and help keep the world safe. SBIRS and the Next‑Gen GEO OPIR ground stations form the backbone of the United States’ missile‑warning architecture.
You will work closely with software, security, and mission engineers to deliver ultra‑reliable, and scalable ground‑systems that enable continuous infrared surveillance and missile‑warning capabilities for legacy & next‑gen satellite constellations.
As Hardware Engineer:
• Design, build, and sustain the ground‑station platform that supports both SBIRS and the Next‑Gen GEO OPIR ground stations.
• Design and plan HW solutions that meet program performance, reliability, and survivability requirements.
• Develop detailed specs and schematics for electronic subsystems, including part selections, tolerance limits, and interface definitions.
• Select and justify hardware components and implementation techniques, connectors, power‑distribution, thermal‑management, RF front‑ends to deliver the most efficient, cost‑effective solution while addressing present and future capacity needs.
• Conduct comprehensive testing and verification of HW designs, including functional, environmental, and integration tests, and document results per applicable standards.
• Maintain technical expertise across the full HW lifecycle, component selection, layouts, packaging, integration, and interfacing with firmware/software, power systems, and communication interfaces (e.g., Ethernet, CAN, LVDS, fiber).
• Evaluate emerging hardware technologies (new semiconductor processes, advanced packaging, additive‑manufacturing, COTS solutions, etc.) and produce recommendations to enhance system capability, reliability, and maintainability.
The information below reflects the standard job description for this position:
Plans, conducts, and coordinates software development activities. Designs, develops, documents, tests, and debugs software that contains logical and mathematical solutions to business/mission problems or questions in computer language for solutions by means of data processing equipment. Applies the appropriate standards, processes, procedures, and tools throughout the development life cycle. Applies knowledge of computer hardware and software, subject matter to be programmed in business/mission applications, information processing techniques used, and information gathered from system users to develop software. Corrects program errors, prepares operating instructions, compiles documentation of program development, and analyzes system capabilities to resolve questions of program intent, output requirements, input data acquisition, programming techniques, and controls. Ensures software standards are met.
