Job Summary and Qualifications
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lead Purchasing Technician is the individual who, under the supervision of the Assistant Director of Pharmacy, or Director of Pharmacy maintains an inventory of drugs and supplies in accordance with the current purchasing group programs. Prepares and places drug and supply orders with manufacturers and wholesalers. Receives the drug and supply order and assures the items and counts are correct as stated on the invoice then sticker prices each item and distributes each in the proper location and under the proper storage conditions. Prepares necessary documentation to initiate processing of the invoices. Assists technicians in the filling of specialty care area stock orders and billing process for non-formulary or special medications not in charge system. The Lead Purchasing Technician must function in strict accordance with standard, written procedures and guidelines with deviation approved by the supervising pharmacist. Organizational relationships include being directly responsible to the Assistant Director of Pharmacy or the Director of Pharmacy.
SPECIFIC ELEMENTS AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS*
1. Performs specialized secretarial functions such as filing invoice, monthly reports, DEA log, and controlled substance records.
2. Operates and uses all equipment such as computers, printers, copiers, Fax machines and software safely
and in an appropriate manner.
3. Assists management in the timely preparation of all necessary reports (financial, usage, etc.)
4. Assists management in the retrieval of accurate, concise, applicable and meaningful data or statistics
5. Collects patient-specific data as necessary to assist management in designing, implementing, monitoring,
evaluating, and modifying policies or procedures to ensure effective, safe and economical patient care.
6. Reviews inventory levels against established par levels.
7. Processes all purchase orders and invoices for medication or equipment. Assuring the item(s) ordered were received at the correct price and as ordered.
8. Places orders for drugs, fluids, and supplies with manufacturers and /or wholesalers.
9. Oversee receipt, unpacking, checking quantities against invoice, price stickers and stores drugs, fluids and supplies under proper conditions.
10. Checks invoice prices against contract prices to assure accuracy of invoices and correct cost of inventory.
11. Initiates the documentation that is necessary to process invoices for payment.
12. Separates for return to manufacturer and/or wholesalers outdated and/or damaged goods. Package authorized returns for sending to the proper location.
13. Manages own conduct, performance and attitude including time, space and paper; ethics; attendance and punctuality; and customer focus.
14. Reviews and adjusts PAR levels with the Assistant Director or Director of Pharmacy or designee.
15. Participates in relevant Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) initiatives.
16. Assists in the process of filling requisitions and floor stock orders.
17. Performs housekeeping duties necessary to keep the storeroom and Pharmacy Department stock areas clean and orderly.
18. Operates and uses appropriate techniques within systems for storage of medicinal agents and follows the health system’s policies regarding cart fill, unit dose distribution, labeling and controlled substances reconciliation, and purchasing of pharmaceuticals and supplies.

What qualifications you will need:
EXPERIENCE
Required - 4 years Pharmacy technician
Preferred - 4 years Pharmacy technician + 2 pharmaceutical purchasing and a general knowledge of inventory control
EDUCATION
Required - Bachelor of Science degree or Associate degree
Preferred - Bachelor of Science degree
CERTIFICATION
Required- Certified Pharmacy technician program certification required
Preferred- CPhT National certification
