Shift Lead – NDT Operations (C & D Shifts) Blue Origin is seeking a Shift Lead – NDT Operations to provide operational leadership and oversight across C and D shifts within our AFP/NDT Production organization. Reports to: AFP/NDT Production Manager Shift Coverage: C & D Shifts Position Summary The Shift Lead will provide day-to-day leadership and coordination of NDT operations across C and D shifts, ensuring safe, efficient, and high-quality execution of inspection activities while supporting production priorities. This role serves as the primary operational leader during off-shift hours, providing direction to NDT personnel, coordinating resources, resolving operational issues, and maintaining production continuity when the AFP/NDT Production Manager is not on shift. A critical responsibility of this position is to provide a complete and accurate handoff of work, production priorities, outstanding issues, and operational status to the A/B Shift Lead and AFP/NDT Production Manager, ensuring seamless transition between shifts. Responsibilities Lead and oversee NDT operations across C and D shifts. Coordinate daily staffing, workload, priorities, and assignments to meet production requirements. Provide direction, coaching, and technical support to NDT personnel. Monitor workflow and adjust priorities to maintain production schedules and customer commitments. Ensure NDT inspections are performed in accordance with approved procedures, quality standards, and customer requirements. Promote a culture of safety, quality, accountability, and operational excellence. Serve as the primary point of contact for operational issues during C and D shifts, making timely decisions to maintain workflow and escalate issues when appropriate. Ensure accurate and timely completion of inspection records and production documentation. Maintain communication with the AFP/NDT Production Manager regarding significant production, quality, staffing, safety, or equipment issues. Conduct comprehensive shift handoffs to the A/B Shift Lead, including: Completed and outstanding work Production priorities and schedule impacts Hardware requiring continued inspection Open quality or technical issues Equipment status and maintenance concerns Staffing updates and resource needs Risks requiring management attention Coordinate with Production, Quality, Engineering, Manufacturing, and Maintenance teams to resolve issues and maintain production flow. Support technician training, qualification, and development. Monitor equipment readiness, calibration status, and inspection capability. Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on safety, quality, productivity, and operational efficiency. Required Skills Demonstrated experience in NDT operations within a production or manufacturing environment. Proven ability to lead teams and make sound operational decisions with minimal direct supervision. Strong knowledge of NDT processes, specifications, quality systems, and inspection requirements. Ability to interpret engineering drawings, specifications, work instructions, and acceptance criteria. Strong communication and organizational skills. Ability to effectively prioritize work in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. Demonstrated ability to communicate across shifts and maintain operational continuity. Strong problem-solving and decision-making skills. Ability to work collaboratively with cross-functional teams while independently managing off-shift operations. Desired Skills Current NDT certifications applicable to required inspection methods. Previous experience as an NDT Lead, Senior Technician, Supervisor, or equivalent leadership position. Experience supporting night shift, weekend, or off-shift manufacturing operations. Aerospace, launch vehicle, or other highly regulated manufacturing experience. Experience with multiple NDT methods and advanced inspection technologies. Experience with nonconformance investigations, corrective actions, and root cause analysis. Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma, Kaizen, or continuous improvement experience. Experience using MES, ERP, or digital production management systems. Demonstrated ability to mentor technicians and develop technical talent. Experience balancing production priorities while maintaining uncompromising quality and safety standards. Leadership Expectations The C & D Shift Lead is expected to operate with a high degree of autonomy, providing consistent leadership and operational oversight during off-shift hours. This role is responsible for maintaining production continuity, ensuring adherence to safety and quality standards, and effectively communicating the status of operations to the A/B Shift Lead and AFP/NDT Production Manager at the conclusion of each shift. The successful candidate will lead by example, foster collaboration, and ensure that work transitions seamlessly between shifts, enabling uninterrupted support of production objectives.
