Job Summary and Qualifications
The Surgical Services Waiting Room Attendant serves as the primary liaison between surgical patients' families and the perioperative team. This position manages the surgical waiting area, provides timely updates to families throughout the surgical process, and facilitates communication between families, surgeons, Pre-Op, Operating Room (OR), and Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) staff. The Waiting Room Attendant helps create a positive patient and family experience by providing exceptional customer service, maintaining confidentiality, and ensuring families remain informed and supported during their loved one's surgical journey.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee the Surgical Services waiting room.
- Welcome patients' families and visitors, providing information regarding waiting room processes and expectations.
- Maintain communication with Pre-Op, OR, PACU, and other perioperative departments regarding patient status and progress.
- Provide timely, professional updates to families throughout the surgical experience while maintaining patient privacy and confidentiality.
- Facilitates communication between surgeons and family members following procedures.
- Notify surgeons and procedural staff of family locations when they are available to provide updates or discuss outcomes.
- Assist with locating family members when needed by the surgical team.
- Answer questions, address concerns, and provide service recovery when appropriate.
- Monitor the waiting room environment to ensure it remains organized, welcoming, and comfortable.
- Maintain accurate records of family contacts and locations as required.
- Escalate concerns or unusual situations to nursing leadership or appropriate clinical staff.
- Demonstrate professionalism, empathy, and excellent customer service in all interactions
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience in a healthcare setting.
- Experience working with patients, families, or visitors in a hospital or surgical environment.
- Knowledge of perioperative services, including Pre-Op, OR, and PACU workflows.
