Masters or equivalent. 3+ years applied research experience.
The Amazon IT UX team develops solutions that enhance productivity for employees at the world's largest company. We build tools that do everything from helping new hires onboard to helping tenured employees find new software tools or connect with an agile workspace. Our work is challenging and our customers are highly diverse, but the scale of our impact can be matched by few other teams.
UX research projects vary from foundational work to understand mental models for emergent technology to evaluative assessment of launched web and app tools. Research helps UX Designers, Product Managers, as well as Engineering and other leaders understand customers' unmet needs and pain points.
We're looking for someone passionate about advocating for employee experiences, who relishes continuous learning, and seeks collaboration throughout research cycles. This is a great opportunity to work closely with and learn from a Senior UX Research to build skills and take on progressively more challenging research.
Key job responsibilities
You'll partner with our head of research to define and execute impactful research. You'll also partner with an enviable group of stakeholders and designers. This role will invest roughly 30% of time on research operations, and 70% on executing research. Research projects will tend to be more tactical and support evaluative/summative needs but with opportunity to grow into more strategic and generative focus.
Key job responsibilities
- Conduct research operations including recruiting and scheduling participants, research lab set-up, processing honoraria/gratuity.
- Assess stakeholder needs and operationalize research questions into methodological approaches.
- Work with partners to develop study findings and synthesize results into actionable research reports and present findings and clips to stakeholders.
- Partner with designers to build foundational deliverables like personas and journey maps.
- Stay current on innovative research tactics and incorporate into best practices or processes.
A day in the life
The Amazon IT UX team is highly collaborative. We each have ownership over individual projects, but build mechanisms to stay closely engaged. A typical day might look like:
- Start the day planning for an upcoming study, setting up a usability lab or testing recording equipment, or conducting 1:1 interviews
- Have lunch with the team-- a local Vietnamese street food restaurant is a team favorite
- An afternoon meeting with a mentor or 1:1 with a team mate
- Participate in an afternoon Design Critique to help a co-worker iterate early design concepts for a new tool
About the team
Learning is a core value. We hold weekly book club meetings and have a monthly Day of Learning for example. We believe in the growth mindset and that downtime leads to effective uptime.
We work on multiple projects, so we can switch gears and gain energy and efficiency from being able to focus deeply or work on diverse needs.
Work-life balance isn’t about how many hours you spend at home or at work; it’s about establishing a flow that brings energy to both parts of your life. We believe that flexible schedules and work styles are critical to happiness and fulfillment.
The following skills are nice to have but not essential to this role:
- Prior experience directly supporting research operations
- Time management / project management skills
- Strong storytelling and communication
- Prior experience with design is not expected but a plus
